I'm sure everybody has seen this by now. What a tragedy. What an awful, stupid tragedy.

Who knows what's next? We've got Syrian refugees pouring into Europe, and several thousand coming to America next year. Will that still be the case? The far-right has been very loud these past few years, and I wouldn't be surprised if these attacks lead to a sharp rise in nativism and anti-immigration feelings. Not that it's necessarily wrong to increase scrutiny over who we let in if there's cause to believe terrorists could be trying to sneak in, but I have a bad feeling we'll hear a lot of voices screaming to ban Muslims from entering the West, both here and in Europe.

And this may be exactly what ISIS wants. They've taken a beating this last month, and if they can paint Europe as the enemy, if they can build a culture of resentment towards an opulent and islamophobic West that denies any succor to their side, they can get a lot more angry young men to pick up arms and join their cause.

For what it's worth, I teach in a public high school with a large refugee population, and if nothing changes, I'll have a lot of new Syrian students next year.

As long as Western countries continue to supply arms and financial support to rebel groups and shitty regimes (Saudi Arabia, etc.) we will have to deal with terrorism on this scale. You can replace Islamic terrorism with Hindu, or atheist, or anything you'd like, it's supporting human scum that breeds this. If only we focused money on actually helping people through education and other humanitarian avenues, instead of trying to free people through violence and overthrowing governments.

If humanity survives another 1000 years history will look back on this time as the continuation of the events surrounding the fall of the Roman Empire. All of this Middle Eastern bullshit right now is directly tied to the fall of the Eastern Empire (Ottoman was just a renaming) and the stupidity of the British and French just making up borders without actually planning for considerations of local tribes and ethnic groups. Money was the concern, and the Empire started its final fall due to debts it accrued to due the involvement of British and French bankers.

That said, I hope ISIS is thoroughly obliterated, but make no mistake, another group will take its place and it will not end until the methods of dealing with the poverty and inequality in the region change.

Atomjacked, I think we both see pretty eye-to-eye on this issue.

I find it depressing that French citizens are now seeing red, seeking revenge for this event. Hopefully cooler heads prevail and France doesn't make the same mistakes the US did after 9/11 in regards to sacrificing unnecessarily (their freedoms) for short sighted revenge. As someone who has been to both Afghanistan and Iraq, I can assure you that retaliation is not going to really go anywhere. Bombing areas where everyone on the ground is already attacking each other across multiple different groups will only encourage them to focus on the external threat of westerners instead of their own religious civil war bullshit.

This right here sounds exactly what this article is trying to warn us about: http://www.cracked.com/blog/6-ways-to-keep-terrorists-from-ruining-world/

And the fight's already started. Our governor has said he doesn't want our state taking in any refugees, but our mayor has said our city will absolutely take in new refugees. We'll see how this one goes.

And of course, the Trump crazy train is far out the door of the demagoguery station that not even Sir Topham Hatt can stop it now. Asshole is saying there is a conspiracy, and Democratic powers are trying to siphon refugees only towards Republican states, so that the Republicans can be the ones who eat terrorist attacks. Sure Donald. I'll tell our Democratic mayor she's getting played by her own side.
