I've always enjoyed 2D Sonic despite the fact that it's just holding right on the d-pad for 45 seconds in almost every stage. Simplicity and speed are a good combination, I suppose.

The problem with the 3D Sonic games is that Sega has forgotten that Sonic needs to run for a bit to get to top speed, but can stop on a dime. They have him running at the speed of sound without any buildup when you push the control stick, but it takes him a longass time to slow down.
