honestly, i feel this should be a non-issue. i honestly dont care who wants to get married to whom. but, i am glad ANYONE can get married to the person that makes them happy. even if i think marriage is a really unnecessary institution.

Government has no business being involved in marriage, period. I should not need a government employee to sign a document stating it's okay for me to marry. Marriage should be a personal experience only, and nothing more.

Fucking finally. America finally decides to enter the 21st century on marriage equality. It was pretty fucking dumb that the states could tell people they weren't allowed to marry the person they love simply for having the same body parts.
I should not need a government employee to sign a document stating it's okay for me to marry. Marriage should be a personal experience only, and nothing more.
I'm assuming this trickles into wanting to abolish the tiered tax system (Single/Married but filing seperately/Married and filing together)?

That would be fantastic. In fact, I would happily vote for anyone who would pledge to push for changing to a sales tax only system. Abolish income tax completely... business OR personal.

@Preng: Mainly because I like the idea of having some control over what I give to the government out of my hard earned paycheck. If I want to buy something luxurious, I know I'm going to pay Uncle Sam a hefty portion along with it. Or, I could choose to go the cheap route and buy the "economy" brand of whatever it may be. In that case, I don't have to pay Uncle Sam as much. I can use my dollars to make a point. If I don't like what the guys in office are doing at any given moment, I can choose to go cheap and that will have a direct effect on government departments and officials. I don't want my money confiscated at the barrel of a gun. The productive member of society gains power through his spending.

I definitely hear your wishes though I would personally be hesitant to move towards that system.
In the Summer of '11 I had an assignment to research the actual feasibility of the fair tax system. I had concluded that the simplicity and personal control were indeed respectable aspects, but there was high potential for unintended consequences. The main points seemed to be:
1. Increased tax evasion (if the IRS were dismantled then this creates a control problem)
2. High tax rates (seems like the fair tax formally advertised a 23% sales tax but its wording/mathematics were a bit deceptive, once unraveled the rate was truly 30%; and some opposing parties believed that about 45% may actually be required since the promoters unrealistically assumed zero tax evasion)
3. Increased taxes for the middle class (the Treasury Department estimated increased taxes for those making between $15k - $200k, whereas Americans for Fair Taxation - the promoters - also admitted that they would likely rise for those making between $40k - $100k)
4. Decreased taxes for the upper class (and these are honestly the guys who are paying most of our nation's taxes)
Some caveats - based on the assignment language my professor was most likely trying to get us to focus the negatives; my research was in 2011 so I'm not sure if there have been any substantial changes to the proposed system.
I seem to recall seeing some potential positives, such as making certain necessities tax-exempt and offering "prebates" based on family size. However I have to admit that high potential for the listed negatives seemed to be too much risk.
The income tax system can definitely be confusing and/or frustrating but if the vote were down to me I'd pick it over the fair tax. At least back in 2011, may have to do some weekend reading to see if their proposals had changed.
I'm politically asleep, is any candidate currently promoting it?

Yeah, fair tax is a joke. I only ever see it suggested by the very rich or more right leaning folks. It is hilarious that because people pay taxes and use money they think that they can come up with some new tax law idea that would work well for the country. Personally, I have nothing to say about it because it is not my area of expertise and I am ok with that. I am glad we have someone like Preng who has some REAL knowledge of the issue here to tell you others the facts. This is a prime example of why the United States would benefit from a technocratic/democratic combined system.
We are all entitled to our own opinions, but I will never sit back and just let people say things I think are plainly stupid without saying something so others don't fall into the same line of faulty logic. I proudly served this country so that we can all be as ignorant or as informed as we like. So we can circlejerk about Ronald Reagan, Bernie Sanders or get married to each other and abort our unwanted fetuses while smoking our marijuanas. May God or an absence of deities bless this land we rightly took from the natives.

I always thought the flat tax idea sounded good, where everyone just pays the same percentage of their income. You know, like Herman Cain was touting last election. Now admittedly, I've researched it very little so I apologize in advance if I'm also putting Cam in economic peril.

I am certainly not an expert in tax matters. That's for sure. Never would I claim to be. What I am an expert in is spending my own money. I believe I can spend it more wisely than my government. So, anything that puts more power over my money in my hands is a winner in my book.
