I agree, double dipping sucks, it's cheap as hell and must be disappointing for her. Unless it's one super awesome present to compensate.

My niece's birthday is December 10th, and my sister's due with another girl in January. My wife and I decided that we're not going to spoil them so much for Christmas, but make sure each of their birthdays are really special.
