Wish I could play it. May have to talk my buddy into buying it.
Meanwhile, apparently Luigi has a humorously strong case of serious face:

i was going to wait for smash bros to buy a wii u, but after watching so many videos & reading so many reviews (including syd's review on this topic) i may have to give in & buy one now. especially since it gives a free game too.

I wish there was a way to limit the number of COM in VS races.

Has anyone tried playing this online?
History is made by stupid people,
Clever people wouldn't even try.

then do something dumb before you die.

The online is fun but obviously lacking in many ways. The original fucking XBOX had a better online infrastructure a fucking decade ago and that's pretty depressing. If you want to play online with a friend, you're going to have to hook up with each other either via text or some other way outside of the game/Wii U since there's no way to even join someone's game. The instruction booklet says you can race against a friend's ghost data but fuck me if I know how to do it unless you manually scroll through thousands and thousands of ghosts online to find them. I really hope they fix a few things with patches down the road because it feels like an actual step back from Mario Kart 7 in some ways.
Also no fake question blocks, what is that about?!

I didn't have any problems playing online as far as lag goes. I was even able to join sessions.
Also, has it always been that only time trials show you lap times?

I believe so, Excel.
I hope they announce something like the Mario Golf: World Tour DLC initiative for this. I want more tracks, more racers, more karts.
I want more one-way downhill tracks like Mount Wario. Also I wish Mirror made it go uphill, so I can play it like Initial D.
Also, it woulda been nice if there were a random option for characters and kart pieces because I find I'm just using whichever ones I didn't before.

Mario Kart 8 was heavily promoted on multiple channels, including television, making it the first Wii U game to get such treatment. Upon release, it sold more than 1 million copies. This is not a coincidence.
Now they're really going all out with the advertising. There's even McDonald's toys for it now.

Got 2 each of Mario and Luigi. I will probably try and get a whole set, they're 2 bucks a piece here without buying the food.
