Okay, I remember that a while back that there were some murmurs of Final Fantasy VI getting an updated treatment like IV got on the DS; indeed, that was what I was hoping for. But no, Squenix decides to put FF VI on Android and iOS. This sounds GREAT until you see that the "spirtes" they've used are flat and just...less detailed than the SNES version:

Then, with the impending release of FF XIII: Lightning Returns aka Conclusion of The Lightning Trilogy, they put THIS out:

So obviously Squenix knows that some people prefer the old SNES era Sprites, and chose not to apply them to the Android/iOS format.

From a financial standpoint, this is interesting to me. Who is the target audience for the iOS release? I know there are still some people who have had Final Fantasy VI on their backlog - I didn't play it until the Game Boy Advance version was released. Though it seems to me that the majority of those who will purchase the iOS release are those who have nostalgia for the game.

In that sense it seems strange to change the aesthetics. It doesn't match my tastes, but the other versions aren't going anywhere. To be honest, if I played the iOS version, it would probably be weird for a bit, and then I'd be able to look past it and just enjoy the game.

I have read that some other adjustments to the game's interface are great additions, so for what it's worth this release does not appear to be all that bad.

As far as I understand things, the mobile version of FF6 is based on the GBA version (with the extra summons and the Kaiser Dragon dungeon). Also, Sabin's blitzes were obviously reworked for a touchpad.

That sprite-based FF 13 piece really looks awesome. Too bad that series isn't.

Also, the font in the iOS version is fucking terrible.

Mega Man X all over again, and inexplicably not in a good way.

Are you referring to the Mega Man Xover game?
Edit: Nevermind, just realized that there is a Mega Man X release on iOS which I have no experience with.

Av Club posted an article on this subject last week that I found very thought-provoking.

It likens the constant upgrades to old games to Ted Turner's colorization of classic films in the '90s.

I will admit that on the first image in LeshLush's link, the tiles used barely match up. I can almost visualize the gridlines when I see that photo. Stuff like that always bothers me.
