http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/12/10/21852934-uruguay-becomes-first-country-to-legalize-marijuana-trade

With a 16-13 vote by their Senate, Uruguay has officially become the first country to have full marijuana legalization, so long as your a Uruguayan citizen over the age of 18. What do you think of this, and do you think the U.S. should legalize it?

I certainly hope so.

Don't care, I'm an adult now and smoking reefer, watching TV for 6 hours and eating lots of shitty food isn't something I miss.

Americans are fat and lazy enough. Last thing we need is another reason to be fat and lazy.

I think it should be legal and treated much the same as alcohol, with an age restriction and penalties for being under the influence in public/when driving. I think 21 is a reasonable minimum age, because young people tend to be dumb when it concerns drugs/alcohol use.

I think the US has more serious issues that cause obesity and laziness and the legalization of marijuana would be more of a scapegoat than an actual reason. Blame the entertainment, pharmaceutical and processed food industries for that laziness and obesity. You could also add education to that. Too much indoctrination in education teaches people to be mindless, blithering sheep, blindly following whatever media is shoving down their throats.

I could go much deeper into this subject but it's getting late and I have work in the morning.

Haha, that reminds me of an old RegalSin quote...

As long as they can find a scientific way to determine if someone is too stoned to drive, similar to how they can measure blood-alcohol levels, I'd be on board. I have no problem with people deciding for themselves that they want to put THC into their bodies, but I do care if they accidentally cause harm to others while under the influence.

However, there's better things for people to do with their time than get stoned, but maybe I'm just an old fuddy-duddy like Woodzy.

I've never smoked before and have no intention to smoke in the future, but I think that the amount of money we spend locking people for possession of a fairly harmless substance is absurd. I'm all for legalization (with responsible age-limits, prohibition of driving, etc.).

Yeah, for every 5 people who aren't obsessed with stoner culture and just happen to like to smoke a joint every once in a while (people who I have no problem with and are the main people I think about when I think weed should be legal for responsible adults to consume), you have 20 loud, obnoxious chodes who insist "But like, dude, I actually like, drive better when I'm high!"

No you fucking don't, get off the road you worthless drain on society.

My brother is like that. He had his license for less than a week when he hit a parked school bus. Then he sideswiped a tree in his own yard a day later. I refuse to ever get in a vehicle with him. He can't go 20 minutes without smoking some weed. The first thing he did when I told him our father had died was say "I really need to smoke a joint." and then lit one up right in front of me. My brother is a dumbass.

I don't think that it's such a horrible idea for legalisation, but it's completely accurate that people who use it (at least around where I live) just get incredibly stupid and end up crashing or things of a similar quality. I don't see any reason to stop someone who needs it or someone who isn't going to abuse it or act dense while under the influence.

@om*d, my condolences for your father's death. When did it happen?

Oh, and I also have a brother who smokes weed. He's leagues more responsible about it, though.

My father died in 2004. It was suicide by fire. Shit happens.

What I don't understand is why the hell you have to be a Uruguayan citizen to smoke it. You'd think this would be great for tourism.

I have two good friends who were pot smokers and they both pretty much couldn't stay in college because of it. Their motivation and drive went to pure shit. I tried to help them by setting a good example and trying to get them just to smoke when they didn't have class or no adult responsibilities the next day but it never helped. Stoners are in their own world. and they are not able to see what the pot does to their brain longterm.

I know there are stories of someone with a high IQ that can still function well on pot but for most people out there it makes them into total idiots. I can't think of anything great pot has done for society. To me it basically can make the present bearable for people who are working at low end jobs/ no real responsibilities but it hurts any longterm chance of huge success in life statistically and that person just wakes up one day not even realizing they haven't made any real gains in their life.

Pot only makes sense to me if you basically are rich/disabled/retired and it doesn't matter what the effects of pot do to you. Some may disagree with me on this im sure.

i liken weed to alcohol. some people can function well having a drink or two a day while others cant control themselves. i have met people on both ends of the spectrum, so i say, legalize it, tax it, and stop throwing people in jail for weed.
