This thread will be more productive. This is a thread where we discuss what is and is not a 2D Mario game.
Is a 2D Mario game flying? As in flying over the stage?
Is a 2D Mario game scrolling on a board of the world map?
Is a 2D Mario game shooting enemies in a plane or submarine?
There are people who do not consider Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island to be a 2D Mario game (See poll). Are they correct?
How do you define 2D Mario? Have there been inclusions in the 2D Mario games that take away from what you consider 2D Mario?
It's obvious Super Mario Bros. USA was not a core design of a 2D Mario game; it is Doki Doki Panic. But does it retain more of a Mario spirit than Yoshi's Island?

I think Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is a Mario game in its own right. It has Mario in the name and has the plumber himself in it.
iPhone games are what you play when you can't get at actual games. You know, like how sometimes alcoholics drink mouthwash.

It wasn't even called Super Mario World 2 in Japan. The name was added in Western territories for marketing purposes.

It was still called "Super Mario: Yoshi Island" in Japan.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I'd care to read more elaborate explanations of why Yoshi's Island is a Mario game to you all. Is egg throwing and flutter jumping and collecting for 100% item runs really what makes 2D Mario games?

My personal favorite is Super Mario World for SNES. Every Mario game that comes close to it pleases me.
