Is there any reason to buy a Wii U?

Not unless you can't live without a handful of first party Nintendo games. I'm still predicting third party support to really fall off once the PS4 and new Xbox come out and are significantly more powerful making it a pain in the ass to port to the Wii U. It won't happen immediately but after the developers really start making use of the full power of the new systems they'll not want to make crappier versions for the Wii U just like they didn't for the Wii. It'll just see a bunch of gimmick games and shovelware with the occasional gem mixed in.

Not right now. Nintendo has not shown off a killer app that justifies the WiiU pad. When Pikmin3, Wonderful 101, and Bayonetta 2 come out it'll make sense to snag one up.

However, none of the above games by themselves make me want to buy WiiU. I most likely will wait 3 years into the console life before I buy one. I am not excited for 3D Mario since Mario is dead to me after playing through the average Galaxy games. Smash is dead since Melee is the last hardcore version. F-Zero is dead because it was perfected with GX. Not excited for Mario Kart since that series lost the plot a long time ago. (Not excited about HD remakes or ports to online shop either.)

Nintendo will really need to impress with StarFox and Metroid (with that rumored fusion game) and Zelda. Nintendo needs to get some genius like Mikami or Itagaki to develop an exclusive game for them. They need to announce Eternal Darkness 2. They need to develop a Donkey Kong third-person shooter game to give their platform a much needed exclusive killer app TPS game. They need to do a lot of stuff because third party support (read the above post) will probably not enrich the WiiU experience.

I love my Wii U, but there are some major points that I need to get across. This is not the system to own if you want to play the majority of third party titles in the next 5 or 6 years. That's just common sense, and you're a retard if you feel the need to bring up that it's gonna be less powerful than the other consoles. No one thinks it is gonna be a major competitor to PS4 or XBOX, at least game wise.

If you like Nintendo, if you like their first party offerings, and you like the Virtual Console, then it's gonna be a great console for you for the next 5 years or so.

If I bought a Wii U it sure as hell wouldn't be to play something I could just get on Steam. I'm looking for something innovative and cool that utilizes the hardware and control scheme in a unique and creative way, and like it was said, there doesn't seem to be a killer app yet.

If developers decide that development costs are far too high to be sustainable on the other two platforms, there's a chance they'll give the Wii U a second look.

We'll see. Being "underpowered" hasn't stopped the 3DS from kicking the Vita's ass and getting the lion's share of the third party support.

There are a variety of factors that make or break a console's success/third party support and technical stats are only one of them. Another thing to consider: some of these OMG M-RATED TITLES OR GTFO companies might not survive much longer. The current AAA video game business model is unsustainable. When selling multimillion copies is a failure, something is wrong. We're gonna see more THQ-like collapses. And more publishers shuttering smaller devs to cut costs. Great game, guys, now you're fired. Peace out.

Well look at it this way.

I bought one today.

I know it doesn't have a lot of games but I can still play (like you Murdar) a lot of games on my PC.

I bought one because I want to play the first party games that come out. I use my PC for playing basically all other non-Wii U games with a few exceptions.

I mean I can give Metal Gear Solid etc. a miss because I am not really that interested in them. Like one of the next games i want is Dark Souls 2. It will be out either for PS3 and if it isn't, I can just get it on my PC.

Also I want to play virtual console games. Exclusives like Halo and stuff are of no interest to me.

I only first played a Halo game 2 months ago. I have no intention of ever getting a Microsoft console. Though maybe in the future I'll get a PS4 but until there is something on PS4 that isn't on WiiU or PC (which is unlikely on PC unless it's a Rockstar game) I am sorted.

My only regret, is the lack of games at the moment but they'll come.

I bought mine on launch day and I enjoy it. As the other guys have said, it's not really for people who want to play mostly third-party titles, but rather those who like creativity and innovation. The first-party titles are pretty damn awesome, in my honest opinion, and I hope to see more come out. It's even backwards compatible with most of your old Wii games, even letting you transfer data from console to console through System Transfer.

The only problem: it won't work with your Gamecube games. If you have a first-generation Wii, you might want to keep that.

You might also want to keep your firstgen Wii for Smash/Kart, because no GCN controller ports.

The only reason that should matter is YOU WANT IT. If you have any doubts you should not buy it. Apply that to everything you purchase.

Madden is skipping appearing on the Wii U this year. It's the first time since 1991 they haven't appeared on a Nintendo console. Is this telling or is it just EA being EA? Fanboys will immediately cry "Who cares, I didn't buy the console for sports and dude-bro games" but honestly, a few of those is what the system needs right now. It will not be a success if it just appeals to a narrow niche market, it needs some mass appeal, even if us as Nintendo fans don't particularly care for the games.

It's hard to tell. Some reports say that EA is playing hardball with Nintendo because Nintendo told EA to take their Origin and shove it, and while that's a more optimistic explanation, it will be interesting to see who will be the last one standing when the dust settles.

I always liked EA, but now my opinion of them is starting to change. Unfortunatly, they are a juggernaut and Nintendo would be remiss to turn its back on them.

Slap, you just named two of the three Holy Grails of gaming. The PS1 was so amazing when it was first released, it's my second favorite and I wish I still had mine.

I have zero desire to play at least 75% of PSX games. The load times are awful and all the firstgen 3D games look like ass. The 2D stuff holds up better, but some of that suffers from loading issues too. There are even less N64 games I stll want to play.

I'd wager you haven't even played 20% of PSX games. And what's with the obsession with graphics? Yeah, a good chunk of PSX games had blocky goofy 3D models but that doesn't stop the vast majority from being fun to play. You should actually try that. Play them, I mean.

And this is directly related to the Wii U because we have scores of people who've never even touched the gamepad or played a game on the console talking shit about it on a daily basis. "Oh the Mii's are too kiddy, there's no real games, the graphics on the ports aren't quite as good." and it's bogus and the kind of shit adults shouldn't be doing in this day and age.

You're right. I have not played the vast majority of PSX games. But I have played a ton of N64 games. So unless you're going to sit here with a straight face and try and tell me that the PSX had better in-game graphics than the N64, I don't need to have.

Am I biased against the PSX inherently to begin with? Yes, probably. I didn't touch a single PSX game until 2000, so I don't have nostalgia-colored glasses about the system.

A lot of the RPGs hold up. That is the nature of RPGs. I'll play Torneko, Dragon Warrior VII, and Final Fantasy IX all fucking day. A lot of other stuff does not hold up, in my opinion, and it's almost solely due to the graphics. Soul Edge? Pass. MGS? Pass. Resident Evil? Pass. Twisted Metal? Pass. And the most famous game released on the system, Final Fantasy VII? Pass. It looks like fucking ass.

I DO have Nostalgia colored classics about the N64. Between the last three years of high school and freshmen year of college, I probably spent around 4-6 months of total combined hours playing N64. But I have little interest in revisiting those games either. I know I'm usually the first to say graphics don't matter, but I'm also the first to add the caveat that that does not apply to firstgen 3D. GoldenEye looks fucking awful. Those shitty blocky characters with painted on faces running through empty cavernous levels doesn't excite me the way it did before I played better games. Mario 64, too. Mario 64 is depressing as fuck to play now. It's so blocky and empty and unimaginative compared to Sunshine and Galaxy. It may have paved the way, put they put up a One Way sign at the entrance to that street.

PS2/GCN/DC is the retro line in the sand for me on the 3D games. If a 3D game doesn't look as good as releases from that era, it's unplayable to me.

And honestly, I do hate Miis. Miis were a cute idea, but then Microsoft came out with Avatars and showed us all how shitty and pedestrian the Miis really were. And Nintendo didn't even ATTEMPT to fix this with Wii U. Make my fucking Mii more elaborate. Get rid of the fucking jeggings and give me real clothing options for fuck's sake.

Thought I was alone in hating most early-gen 3D. Some PSX games are so jaggy and messy in motion that it gives me headaches. I have disagreements with some of your specific mentions like FF7, but early 3D processors by the large didn't really do justice to their games' art styles (if there was a good one at all). It's more of a case of me hating the hardware for limiting the game, than any real negative opinion on the game itself.

It's hard to explain. I can actively respect if a game is good if its graphics are dated, but if the game looks like total butt with limited color palettes, repetitive textures, awful in-motion visuals, and non-descript character models, hell yes it's going to poorly affect my enjoyment of it quite a bit. I won't call it a bad game, in fact I'll acknowledge that it may have been impressive and good for its time, but most of the time I won't finish it unless it's an RPG with a particularly good story, an FPS with good action, an adventure game with good writing, etc.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.
