Throwback!!!

This is a thread to post anything GameBoy related. (They're like indie games I care about.) No GBC or GBA games though. However, I think we should all post an image of the gamebox or cartridge we have to show off before we post on it. Give's the thread a bit more pizzaz.

Anyhow my favorite GameBoy game that I own that did not get swallowed forever under an old Nissan Quest car seat is KoF 95.

Image

Funny story is that this game did get swallowed underneath the old Nissan's car seat and was lost for years. It only appeared when I was moving to live in another state -- it was sticking out of the bottom of the car seat!! So, I pretty much get Nintendo thumb to this game.

This game is crazy in that you get infinite supers when you reach low health. Characters like Benimaru and Joe can spam their massive concentrated energy (lightning ball and hugeass tornado) and become unapproachable.

The game is all chibi'd out. It looks really cool. I haven't played KoF95 on Neo Geo or played the supposedly better GameBoy KoF (96') to make comparisons. I think Kim is high-tier because he has some wicked fast low attacks and is a rapist on hard mode.

More to come...

Unfortunately I don't have the boxes or carts anymore, hell I don't own an original GameBoy system anymore. But I can say that I did love the Castlevania series that made its way on to the GB system (Belmont's Revenge, and Legends are the first two that come to mind).

But really the GameBoy game that captured it all in my life was Tetris. My dad spend the better part of a 5 hour road trip in the back seat playing Tetris. He must have said 3 things the entire trip...."what?" "huh?" and "I'm thirsty"....

I am glad that I have found emulators for my PSP that will relive the GB games from my youth.

Thanks for starting a GameBoy thread Vert1

My mom still has our original Gameboy, though we only had like 4 games for it and two of those we no longer have. I'd say Tetris was the most played until we got Pokemon Blue. After that basically nothing but Pokemon got played for years. We did end up getting Harvest Moon GB eventually and that got played a bit until we got GB Colors shortly afterwards.

Honestly though I can't recall much other than Pokemon and Harvest Moon getting played on the Colors either. We mostly owned them for playing Pokemon with friends, each other, and for long car trips. We had other systems when we wanted to play games at home and so we never really expanded our library beyond a handful of games between the two of us. The only games I can think of that we owned were Pokemon R,B, & Y, Harvest Moon GB, Tetris, Some card game pack that my mom bought for herself, and Harvest Moon 2&3 GBC. I know we did rent some other games but I can't recall what they were.

I am honestly not a fan of KoF 95 for the Game Boy. I think it's really ambitious how fast the framerate is and the sheer amount of characters they put on one Game Boy cart, but the controls are really unresponsive and all of the moves feel so rigid. I feel like it would control way better if jumping felt smoother.

The only fighting games (at least, in my opinion) for the Game Boy that're worth anyone's time are Killer Instinct and Street Fighter Alpha, both of which play and flow smoothly.

I think it'd be cool if Syd did a Top Game Boy games list. Not necessarily 100, because I can't think of 100, but 50 would definitely be doable.

Original Game Boy was lost long ago.

But the way I discovered the Castlevania series was someone had left their copy of The Castlevania adventure on a bus. In Florida. While I was on vacation. So that was cool.

Everyone raves over the Power Glove but isn't this more desirable?

I recently reacquired Final Fantasy Adventure. I forgot how much I enjoyed it growing up.

I still will play TMNT Fall of the Foot clan, Solar Striker, and the first Mega Man on a regular basis. I do generally play them on my GBA SP or Super GameBoy on my SNES but either way loved the system. I also still have my original Gameboy in 1991 and it still works no issues.

I still prefer the old Pokemon games (Red/Blue/Yellow and Gold/Silver/Crystal) over all the newer ones.

I'm sick now (damned Flu), and this thread brought to mind a certain time in the late 1980s that will forever remain lodged in the esophagus of my mind.

My family had plans for early February...we were to spend an entire week in Florida, which to the mind of a first grader might as well have been an eternity. An eternity in paradise, for our eventual destination was Disney World, home to Pirates, Happy Haunts, and horribly terrifying space-themed roller coasters into which I wouldn't dare venture for another couple of years. I didn't love it so much for the actual rides themselves, but for what it did to my nascent creative instincts. The entire place was (and is) like crack for my imagination. But first, we had to spend three days in a place called Sanibel Island. They didn't have pirates or space ships, but they did have dried up starfish. And the flu.

My memories are scant as I was only around 5 or 6 when this took place, but I can remember the inside of the hotel room, which was decked out in hideous late-80s beige, watching Looney Tunes - specifically roadrunner - from the bed in said room, and trying not to laugh very hard because it hurt to do so - vomiting a lot in the bathroom - and one very brief instance where I felt OK enough to go to the beach. I wasn't even well enough to engage in my favorite beach activity: harassing seagulls. My parents, feeling like the world's worst (shows you how crazy they were and are), decided to bestow upon me something they thought would make a good consolation prize for missing 3 days of beach-time while becoming intimate with the Sanibel Hilton's plumbing system. Little did they know that they were granting me access to a piece of cultural iconography that would become analogous to an entire generation; a harbinger of the technological handheld age that has since defined our society.

On the subsequent drive from Sanibel to Orlando, my parents' fears that I'd be moaning in flu-induced pain turned to relief and bemusement; not a word came from the backseat during the entire (substantially lengthy) car trip.

They had given me something called "Gameboy". And it came with something called "Tetris".

"Haha" - everyone ever at some point

GameBoy was the shit back then! I had Pokemon Blue and Red, GameBoy Camera and other titles. I sadly don't have one anymore. Nowadays I have a 3DS.

Really really want to play these games. Anyone played them? (I played Fortified Zone when I was a kid and thought it was sweet. Too bad I lost that game.)

I still have the original Game Boy, as well as a Game Boy Color and a Game Boy Advance SP.

I use the Super Game Boy on the SNES when I want to play Game Boy games, though.

I've only ever played the NES game, but I loved it. What makes the Gameboy version superior?

Altered Space is like a really not-fun rip-off of Solstice for NES, Fortified Zone is a pretty kickass Contra clone, Gargoyle's Quest is an awesome metroidvania-type game, Sword of Hope is like a weird hybrid of a turn-based RPG and Shadowgate. It's slow, but quite fun. Haven't played the other two, though Mysterium looks interesting.
