So I just got this press release in my inbox (relevant parts excerpted):
Quote: |
BOSTON - March 22, 2013 - Capcom, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, ended its panel at the PAX East convention today with the announcement that three titles from its revered catalogue - DuckTales , Dungeons & Dragons®: Tower of Doom and Dungeons & Dragons®: Shadow over Mystara - are making a welcome return on multiple platforms in the coming months. Originally released in 1989 on the Nintendo Entertainment System, DuckTales was widely acknowledged as one of that generation’s seminal platform titles. Taking its cue from the Disney cartoon series of the same name, DuckTales Remastered follows the adventures of Scrooge McDuck as he explores differently themed worlds to collect their treasures and become the world’s richest duck.
DuckTales Remastered has seen the development team take the levels and layout from the original 1989 release as a foundation before expanding upon them to significantly enhance the gameplay experience but where this update truly impresses is its graphics and sound. All of the visuals from the 8-bit game have been beautifully re-created as hand-drawn and animated sprites, across a backdrop of luscious, re-envisioned level backgrounds. Furthermore, original Disney Character Voices talent, including some from the cartoon TV series, bring in-game characters to life with charm and wit, while the classic melodies of the original soundtrack are given a modern twist.
Further additions to the original include an all new tutorial level where players can get familiar with the iconic pogo jump and cane swing; while Scrooge McDuck’s Museum allows players to track all their stats and compare their progress with others via global leaderboards.
A Disney Interactive licensed property, DuckTales Remastered is being developed for Capcom by WayForward and is scheduled for release digitally on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft®, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, and Wii U™ this summer. |
Yep.

Modern gaming yuck.

It won't. NES graphics & sound have charm and wit. Making it into a Disney cutscene removes the charm and wit because uses advanced technology that loses its nostalgia & simple nature of charm of the 8-bit style of those games.

I hope that modern twist isn't this crap dubstep/trap garbage. I'm curious who will be rearranging/composing this soundtrack. I'm sure there will be an option to play the original music.
Would be really cool to see a modern DuckTales with 4 player co-op in a store retail release. But that would require effort. heh.

Many of the original game's levels are featured, along with new areas added for the remake and new boss patterns. The game will feature a 2.5D presentation, with 2D characters mixed with 3D-modeled levels, as well as voice acting by the original cast of the animated series. |

Honestly, if any classic game needed a tutorial on how to play, it would be Duck Tales. That pogo jump ain't exactly intuitive.

If this is happening, then the door's open for Capcom's other Disney titles to get the same treatment, including DuckTales 2.

The door's only open if it sells, is what the rep at the PAX East booth said.
Oh yeah, I'm at PAX East.
They had ONE console set up to play it, and the line was way too long, but I watched. The level design seems to be 100% faithful, and the character sprites look amazing. I don't know how I feel about the 3D backgrounds. They're VERY busy, and I really wish they were sprites. There are also a ton of unnecessary cutscenes added. Hope you like mashing through Scrooge droning on about Draculetti manor for two minutes before you actually get to play the level.
This is still a Day One purchase for me though.
Also, Capcom had FIVE consoles set up to play Lost Planet 3. Who in the fuck wants to play THAT? Those consoles should have all been DuckTales.

I hope they have an option in the game to play the classic version, either right from the beginning or after you beat the remastered version. That would be great. I will get it either way.

I figure some of you might be interested in this.

We have ALL the original voice actors from the show.
Scrooge's voice actor is now 94 years old but he still came into the studio and did his thing like a pro. The voice work really adds a lot to the package. |

At PAX, I couldn't hear sound, or it's possible there was none. That's damn cool though. God bless Alan Young.

Do I mind hearing Alan Young's probable last speaking role ever and seeing cutscenes reminiscent of a show I enjoyed immensely as a child? No, no I don't.

Again, I didn't realize these scenes were voice acted. I saw the text and I was like, WTF is there so much added text in this.
Knowing now that it's fully voiced acted by the original cast makes it way better. Also, to be clear, they're not REAL cutscenes. They're NES/SNES style cutscenes were the character models are on screen together and text runs along the bottom the screen, I believe with the character's face next to it. But with awesome voice acting.

As a child I never knew how to do that damn pogo jump, I didn't figure it out until years later. I would agree that a tutorial would be necessary for this game.

That's how WayForward does all its cutscenes. Although I wish the mouths moved.

I heard about this on RadioNintendo. I'm not sure if I would play it or not. I have the first DuckTales game (I still have it to this day), but I wasn't really into it. I have beaten it a few times when I was younger, but never played it much after that. It's cool that they'll introduce DuckTales to a whole new generation. What's extra cool about it is that they'll have the original voice cast from the cartoon.
I would like them to remaster the first Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers game. I might play that if they did.

I'm actually thankful for that. While the original game's a classic and the sequel's good, too, I just don't hold the source material in high regard. A good chunk of that show, thinking about it now, just hurts my brain.

All the afternoon Disney cartoons totally passed me by. I might still play this because I'll play anything WayForward puts out.
