Your ears aren't playing tricks; eighties Raphael is now this era's Donatello.

If you've seen Utimate-Spiderman, you'll notice a trend in cartoon humour these days. I quite like the art style though.

So the series is finally out (3rd episode aired just last Saturday) and I'm going to definitely stick with it. The first mutated human they deal with is a guy named Snake who mutates into a plant creature (Mikey names him Snakeweed). The transformation lingers long enough to convey agonizing pain (and he doesn't pass out like some networks would dictate) And when he's reborn as a mutant plant being, he physical splits his lower stalk, with audible tearing and cracking, revealing exposed leg bones and purple blood like a massive open sore along the inside of each leg.
The latest episode had Lewis Black as a guest voice.

The animation style reminds me of Beast Wars or Reboot, except not as exciting or groundbreaking because it's 15 years later.

I think that it's more like Fanboy & Chum-Chum. Especially with the anime-style changes to the eyes and perspective during emotion (Raph's eyes turning into fire from being insulted, for example).

I'm all caught up now, and I must say: BRILLIANT!
I really love everything about this show. It has its nods to the old 80's/90's toons, Its well paced and funny and very stylish. I was sold when on the first episode they pop out into the city for the first time. The visuals are really awesome. I've been watching it with my kids and they crack up every 5 seconds at the jokes.
The plots have their share of seriousness spiced with silly in a way that other shows aim for but miss. Why couldn't Ultimate Spider-Man be this good?

I grew up in the 90's so I was a fan of the first TMNT series. The 2003 TMNT series was not that memorable to me. I watched a little bit of the 2012 series... it is better than the 2003 series.
