How skewed can a video games list compiled by a magazine and voted by its readers get? Well... (Note that the list is broken as it doesn't sort numbers intelligently, so the list jumps from 2000 votes to 19000 votes.)

It goes all over the map in terms of history, so don't let it be said that they're too old or too young to write up a list of 100 relevant video games.

This list confuses me.

History is made by stupid people,
Clever people wouldn't even try.
If you want a place in the history book,
then do something dumb before you die.

http://techland.time.com/2012/11/15/all-time-100-video-games/?iid=tl-article-moreontime is the actual article. The list Excel linked is how many people agree or disagree that it belongs on the list.

The list itself also doesn't appear to be in any particular order

It's an interesting list. Nice to see games like Animal Crossing, Cave Story, Okami, and Thief gat some love.

I see Zork, Wizardry, Lode Runner, Ultima IV, Wing Commander, Dune II, Myth the Fallen Lords and Grim Fandango among the others that are always on these lists, so I'm very happy.

The list is in chronological order. They came up with 100 games and then listed them by release date.

Pretty much the greatest thread of all time: http://www.sydlexia.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14789

That's cool, at least. I always hate how magazines/sites always try to rank them in terms of quality or whatever, just to get comment sections all riled up and build up site hits. It's a solid list that just recognizes great games, and I appreciate that.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

What I meant is it doesn't appear to be in "worst to best" order.

It looks like they only went with one game per series. No SMB3 or Super Mario World either.

Incorrect. SMB1 and Mario 64 are both on the list. As are Metroid/Metroid Prime and Final Fantasy VII/Final Fantasy Tactics. Maybe one per franchise per genre?

Also, in most cases, they went with the first game in a series (Castlevania, King's Quest, Mega Man, Mortal Kombat) when a sequel was significantly better.

I remember coding up a hunt the wumpus clone as a teenager and feeling like a boss. Good times.

I honestly feel it's a little weird that they picked the first Mega Man, the first Silent Hill, the first Mortal Kombat, and Grand Theft Auto III when there are other better games in those respective series, but opinions, opinions etc.

Mortal Kombat 1 is the only one I'm kinda okay with over a sequel. Yes, MK2 was a MUCH better game, but MK1 was the one that made all the news broadcasts and the one with the greatest TV commercial ever.

Also, who's idea was it to give the Chrono Trigger write-up to a guy that clearly hates Chrono Trigger?

They seem to have went with games that made appreciable impacts on the industry and pop culture as a whole. A sensible way to do a list like this for a magazine that's all about changes in culture, I suppose. It would explain Hunt the Wumpus if nothing else.
