a kickstarter project to publish this book:

Quote:
What is it?

An unofficial 240-page encyclopedia on everything there is to know about the classic NES game Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!...and a whole lot more! This book will appeal to everyone from nostalgic fans to hardcore retro gamers.

The book is a non-profit fan creation and not affiliated with Nintendo.

What is the goal?

The goal is to print 200 copies of the book so you can own a copy! The plan is to:

Finalize the book by obtaining the remaining copyright permissions (i.e. Nintendo) and making final touch-ups
Print through self-publisher, Blurb, whose bulk discount rate has been arranged

more pics & info at the link.

seems like a neat idea, but a bit pricey for my tastes

You would really think that $25,000 would cover more than 200 copies of this book, even with all the copyright fees and whatnot else... Intentional rarity to jack up the price, maybe?

I have a hard time believing you could make an "encyclopedia" 100 pages long about Mike Tyson's Punch Out, let alone 240.

There are a lot of what if's in life Donny. What if I hit you really hard in the face, knocked yo shit to the back of yo skull? What if I....had you girl gargle my nuts? The fact remains, you are a fuckin mutant.

It looks like most of it is pictures. So, yeah, you're probably right.

Unless it's a 240 page flipbook on how to beat Mike Tyson, or it has flow charts on how to beat every opponent, I'm not interested.

They've got more copyright issues to get past than Nintendo. They have to also get permission from Tyson. It's a very obvious hurdle that could have been avoided simply by making it the "Punch-out Encyclopedia". Which would have been more correct anyways.

I don't see this happening.

I wonder what Mike Tyson thinks of the game right now.

I bet he'd probably like it better if the Wii sequel didn't make fun of him.

I think he'd be more curious what kind of check he could get out of it.

He'd likely want more than 25 grand.

I read the page and found this:
Quote:
What will you get?

$10 star uppercuts Glass Joe to get an eBook
$125 counters the Bull Charge to get a hardcover book and eBook
$175 sends Sandman to sleep to get all of the above and a numbered limited edition poster signed by the designer and myself
$250 TKOs Tyson in the first round to get all of the above and the hardcover will be numbered and signed by Matt Turk, Sinister1 and myself!

Oh look, more pay-to-win garbage. It's rampant enough in today's games; why make it an issue for the NES?

...huh? That's how Kickstarter always works, or for that matter, any pledge drive. You pledge more, you get more.

With so many well written internet guides out there for free, I'm not exactly sure how anyone ever makes money off printed ones.

It looks like a Nintendo Power Magazine on the inside. And i don't really dig that. That's a kids format. I expected something you can read. It's more a picture book that way.

It's still neat as a collectors thing tough.

It's a coffee table book. They're supposed to look like that.

So it looks like, shockingly, Nintendo isn't rushing out to give this guy permission to violate their copyrights (and it finally occurred to him to ask Tyson, who has apparently completely ignored it). At least he didn't take the money. That was decent of him.
