God damn it. We've got to be the only developed nation in the world with this kind of shit. Instead of the controversy being around gun control, it's now around printed photographs:

I kind of agree with Carr. We see so much movie violence, which to me gives us a weird view of real violence. We cheer for war without understanding true violence. We have action fantasies where we believe that if everyone has a gun, the good people would kill al the bad people. I don't want a tabloid paparazzi race to get the nastiest picture, but mundane facts and pictures of crying people don't really convey the pain and tragedy of what happens in something like this. And as long as we don't really comprehend it, it'll still be a problem.

These days, if the gunman only manages to kill one person, it doesn't even seem worth reporting in my opinion.

Ugh... I usually don't even bother with political threads because the very existence of my thoughts offend most people. So I pretty much just talk about Mega Man 2 most of the time.

I know it's not cool to quote the founding fathers anymore because you know they were racist and sexist and extremest. And I'm pretty sure Ben Franklin was a sexual deviant or something which should obviously overshadow his countless accomplishments. So anyway, "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither safety nor liberty." -Benjamin Franklin

in Edmonton AB someone was shot down the street from where I live in broad daylight

thing is, I live in a pretty good part of town with a very low crime rate so it came as a complete shock but shootings and stabbings are very common in Edmonton too

Let's assume it's a mixture of the two!

One injured during Newry shooting
A shot was fired into the front room in Drumalane Park

One person escaped serious injury when a shot was fired into the front room of a house in Newry on Saturday.

Police said the victim suffered "very minor" injuries to his neck and arm during the shooting in Drumalane Park at about 23:15 BST.

They want to speak to the driver of a blue and silver Mitsubishi Jeep seen in the area at the time of the shooting.

Detectives also want to hear from anyone who noticed unusual activity in the area at the time of incident.

Never change Northern Ireland.

I think we need a hardline, strict interpretation of the second amendment the way our Founding Fathers would see it.

Which of course means that everyone has the right to own a black powder musket.

Can we go back to swords and plate armor?

So apparently it's being suggested that most people were wounded, and some possibly killed, by the crossfire between the police and the shooter.

Who else was killed other than the gunman and the victim?

Give the cops some slack. Actually shooting people in a shootout is really hard.

I understand. I'd rather the cops intervene have 1 innocent be killed than let the gunman just keep on going.

I keep hearing from gun nuts that if they had been in the Aurora theater, they'd have just pulled out their (insert impressive firearm here), and shot Holmes in the head. This would be plausible if:

-You could see in the dark
-You could identify and shoot the gunman (if there is only one)
-You could see through tear gas.
-There aren't other people with guns all shooting each other in the confusion.

I hate that argument against gun control. First of all, freer proliferation of guns in Colorado and Arizona didn't stop the Aurora or Giffords shootings, respectively. And secondly, despite what the news would have you believe, randomized gun violence is a really unusual phenomenon. Much less rare are drunken arguments, road rages and fist fights over whatever. Making legislation that might stop a randomized killer or two is sort of like using a flamethrower to solve your termite problem. Sure, you might get some of the bastards, but is the collateral damage really worth it?

Don't get me wrong: I don't think ridiculously tight gun control is a good idea either. But that particular argument is bullshit.

The origin (non-gang-related anyway) is probably in our culture, with availability of firearms throwing fuel on the fire.

this. pretty much this.

but, you always hear about the 1 plane that crashed and you never hear how 8000 planes landed safely that day.

[somewhat incoherent rambling]

Pistols suck ass for defending yourself. I have a bunch of stuff in my house I'd use instead, that happen to be very easily reachable.

I can slam people with a hammer. That doesn't really work with a pistol.
I can stab people with a fucking giant kitchen knife. I can't with a pistol.

Sure, a pistol works very well when charged. But, personally I don't want to keep a charge pistol on me constantly in the off chance I get attacked, because while waiting for that to maybe one day happen I'd be far more likely to accidentally shoot someone I know than an actual criminal because my gun falls on the floor and fires or whatever.

Also, if you're in public and you try to shoot a criminal, there's a decent chance you'll hit somebody else instead. Especially if your aim sucks.
In Canada, you have to follow a safety and regulations course (whatever its name is) to own any type of gun. I could be wrong, but I don't think this is mandatory in the US. If it isn't, that's just dumb. Or maybe US citizens are smart enough that you can trust them to not do retarded shit with their guns, I don't know.
