This is a thread to discuss social constraints in videogames.
Quote: |
The inclusion of the smaller Oddjob multiplayer character who was difficult to shoot at, for example, is something that Hollis still laughs about. "To me, that's a social dynamics problem," he joked. "You should be putting pressure on your friend not to use him." |
Another constraint is that when I play my friends with items on in Smash64 their is this code that no one will pick up a hammer or star. This has led to humorous situations where someone just says 'fuck it' and picks them up anyway. As of late, we've agreed that all items go for your last life.
So please list other social agreements you and your friends make when playing games.

Can't you just shut off items in Smash Brothers if you really want?
Also, Oddjob isn't cheap unless everyone is using auto aim. If you're using auto aim, the guns automatically calibrate for your opponents' chests. But if you fire in Oddjob's direction without auto aim, his head is at gun level, making headshots really easy.

If you play with auto-aim, you are less than human and deserve to lose.

I can't think of any huge social constraints I have with video games, other than the obvious ones like not to hit each other in beat-em-ups.

In Super Smash Brothers, I don't care if you're losing, resorting to using the laser gun to slowly push me off stage is a dick move and unacceptable.

no screen watching in FPS. this was huge back in the Goldeneye days of the N64. it would be pretty obvious when you screen watched, and it ruined some of the fun

Back in the day, if you bitched enough for losing that you unplugged the controller, then you were snack bitch for the rest of the night.

in sports games, if there is a dead ball, you have to make sure the other guy is there to start the action again, and that includes if he is taking a beer drink.

Since screen watching was inevitable, we played with radar on so that no one could claim that those of us who played the game enough to know the levels were cheating.
Besides, screen watching was good. It prevented camping and cowardice.

Can't you just airdodge?
Then again people are play with are pretty awful, and I'm barely any better, but I DO block sometimes. They don't. So I spam A with the fan until they have 200-300% damage

We're supposed to have a rule that you're not allowed fuck your friend's girlfriend, even if he's been playing Call of Duty all day, but I never agreed to it. My philosophy is that if you're playing Call of Duty, that's your problem.
