You REALLY need to learn the difference between quoting and posting an entire article, Vert.

That is, how these articles validate your points? The fact that you have to cut and paste the entire thing instead of highlighting the point you're trying to reach kinda feels like you don't fully grasp the point either and have to shield yourself from argument by means of articles by "experts".

Second, two can play that game:



It reminded me of the word I was looking for one of the reasons games like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest (I'm really surprised no one brought that game up....) were revolutionary in their time:

"Approachability"

It grabbed the RPG concepts from DnD and, let's humor you, Wizardry (I still think that's flawed research from your part, but I don't have any data to back that up, so...) and made it more approachable for people to try it out.

For that matter, is what made games like Contra great as well on their own right. You didn't spend hours figuring out what to do and didn't swamp you with bullets the second you started played, yet it was difficult enough to make it impossible to finish it in one sitting (unless you used the code, but that's another matter...).

Finally, what did I tell you about proofreading your posts? You sound less like a gamer and more like a basement dweller hipster threatened by the idea that your niche hobby is becoming mainstream.

Like it or not, the gaming industry needs to adapt with the times in hopes for it to keep growing, and listening to "hardcore gamers" demanding an unreasonably high entrance bar for newcomers amounts to economical suicide, not to mention damaging the gaming community as a whole.

But if you're really desperate for "challenges", go play I Wanna Be The Guy or something...

I'm more than glad more accessible RPGs like Final Fantasy and Ultima: Quest of the Avatar came out on the NES. I remember playing Wizardry on the NES as a little kid and dying constantly (the fact that I was a seven year old trying to grasp an RPG where my strongest character had 8 HP wasn't helping things).

I'm a huge Nintendo fanboy, like to the point of it being a sickness. I like it. But anyway, I do prefer games like Wizardry and Ultima on the PC just because of complexity and more freedom, longer play time, etc.. but I'll be the first to say I'm definitely glad there were ports of them on other systems so people could experience them who otherwise wouldn't have.

Except for Ultima VII on SNES, that game can burn in hell.

I'm all down for complexity in RPGs. I never really appreciated that in old PC RPGs, but I definitely enjoy the advantage now. Even then I'll still fire up an old FF game if I'm not in the mood to have to make massive, open-ended decisions., or if I want to experience a more focused, linear narrative.

Besides that, I just dislike the attitude that some people have that we should dump non-complex games, dump casual games, dump cover shooters, etc. just because it doesn't appeal to them. I'm glad we have so many things to pick and choose from, and that people who may like games but may not be completely invested in them as a hobby all have ways to enjoy themselves.


So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

These lists predictably represent a whole host of different agendas, outlooks, and opinions on what constitutes a "great" video game. Some placed a large emphasis on recognizing games that were historically "relevant" or "innovative" while others simply celebrated games that were fun to play.

Assuming these lists represent voices of authority in the gaming community, we can easily make a cumulative list averaging out the most universally popular games. I'm not smart enough to do mathematical averages of rank, but based on sheer popularity, the top 10 games of all time seem to be:

As you can see, there is not a very strong consensus here. Chess is a very simple game. It has simple rules. It is simple to understand. Making chess more complicated and giving the player more options does not necessarily make for a better game. Very few people would argue Knightmare Chess or Archon are better games than chess (not that they aren't great games).

Even, say, Frogger (since I haven't played any of the Pac-man remakes)...simple game. Adding complexity and options and stuff to it? Didn't work.

I agree with this. I think it is great that we have so many different games to pick from. Some days it is nice to be able to pick up a game and just play without having to deal with it being super complex all the time, but if I want a challenge there are a ton of games out there that can give me that challenge too. I think it is awesome that the Wii has made gaming more accessible and acceptable to a ton of people. Not everyone wants to play a game that takes 80+ hours to beat, some people want to pick up a controller and just play a game of bowling or some tennis. They might not be driving the industry with their smaller number of game purchases but at least we aren't having to listen to them be all super elitist about video games either like I assume those huge walls of text Vert posted were. Just shut the fuck up and be happy that we have tons of video games to choose from if we want to kill some time.

I wish they made a version of Super Mario Brothers where you didn't control Mario. You controlled a neuron in Mario's brain. Actually, you would control all of the neurons. It would take a shitload of multi-taps, far more than were ever produced, but if you daisy chained them all, you could have each neuron be it's own controller. The A button would cause a neuron to fire, B would cause it to cease firing, and wiggling around on the D-pad would have a small chance of giving Mario a seizure, an aneurysm, or synesthesia. That way the tardfags and communist children who enjoy SMB would have to learn neuroscience and develop masculine reflex ability, or else shoot themselves in the face with a tampon cannon soaked in Axe body spray and Red Bull. When real people run, jump, shoot fireballs, and jump on turtles, they don't just hold left and push A. In real life. your brain, WHICH IS MADE UP OF NEURONS THAT FIRE, assembles itself into a complex, gestalt whole, which as an integrated part of the totality of your body, is the impetus of the act of running (vis-a-vis jumping, fireballing, tanooking, e.g. etc.). It is this complexity of neurology that makes turtle stomping fun in real life, thus it is the complexity that also lends to SMB, also known as Turtle Stomping Brothers: The Simulation, it's sense of fun, on the LESHLUSH normalized fun-score metric (logarithmic scale of course. We have learned our lesson.). I only wish the same could be said of the much inferior sequel, TSB:TS2: Judgment Day. For as utterly nonsensical as it is for Bio Force Ape to be on this list, the little that exists of that game is awesome.

Like I said before, if he had chosen some of those more obscure games and made it a "best games you may not have heard of" list, it'd be a really damned good article. Instead, it came off as kind of pretentious because he was just name-dropping the most obscure games he could and rating them above many popular classics. He still writes well, and a lot of those lesser-known games look cool, but it was the tone of the article, and the listing that rubbed people the wrong way.
