So recently I've been getting "phantom" sound on my computer and I have no idea what's causing it. What I mean by that is I keep hearing ads/music playing when there is nothing open that would have such things in it. Even when I turn browser sounds off on my volume mixer, so I know it's not just horribly delayed Flash ads or something. The audio is usually choppy and cuts out after a few seconds, but it's getting irritating as it plays over whatever music or movies I'm currently running. I ran Antispyware and Malwarebytes but that didn't solve it. Anyone even have the slightest idea what I'm dealing with here?

I've experienced this, I had other instances of a browser open and when I alt-ctrl-del I saw like 4 other instances of Firefox open playing ads and other dumb shit. No idea why they weren't actually showing up when I alt-tabbed over. I stopped using Firefox and haven't had it happen since. Not saying you should switch browsers, just saying a possible cause.

i've had this happen as well. the ads appear off screen. i think i had to do something like hit f11 for them to appear on screen or something like that.
i dont think it happened on firefox w/me though. if anything, it was definitely IE that was giving that issue.

Not as relevant as the other posts, but if you're using firefox and you don't have AdBlocker Plus (which seems likely in context), get it. The internet will never be the same.

If you browse using another browser such as IE or Chrome do the same symptoms appear?

I don't know, I don't use any others and the only other one I have is IE. And this phantom sound business happens infrequently enough that I'd have to use it for a while to test and see.

Try looking through your Add-ons within Firefox to see if there are any that you don't recognize. Often times one of them is the culprit. Running Malwarebytes and Superantispyware should help you out as well. See ninite.com to pick up the malware cleaning utilities.

Alright, after checking the Add Ons, I found a few I didn't want, a few i had no idea where they came from and that my Adblocker was actually OFF for some reason. Let's see if that helps.

So I switched to Chrome, ran Malwarebytes, Super AntiSpyware and Spybot Search & Destroy and I'm still hearing this shit. Starting to piss me off because I was pretty sure it was Firefox. Now I don't know what the fuck it is.
