Not sure if anyone here has heard but there is a new indie phenomenon out in the form of an Arma 2 mod called DayZ. It is basically a survival horror, persistent world game that takes place in a fictional Russian country overrun by zombies.
It is hyper realistic, which may turn some people away. You start with nearly nothing and have to scavenge for food, drink, medical supplies and weapons. If you die you loose everything.
It's tons of fun. Also, rather cheap if you buy the Arma II: combined Ops Pack on Steam.
Any Zombie Apocalypse fan should check it out. Beware however, that PVP is the real danger and the MOD is still in its alpha stages.
Lol i feel like i am one step ahead of the news at the moment.
Yeah i've been playing this for a month or so now. The games weren't the cheapest it was about £25 for both just to play the mod but the mod is intriguing enough to pay it.
It suffers the problems of all those games which are made inside other games aka it's limited by their game world. It would be nice to be able to go into all the buildings but you can't.
It's realistic in some respects but i find it gets boring. Once i have ammo, food, water and some bandages i just tend to sit on rooftops and shoot people passing by.
People say the game has a steep learning curve, i would disagree. The game cleverly uses the mechanics of noise and sight in which the zombies will hear/see you. If you stamp along a gravel path at full speed you are fucked so you have to crouch and basically slowly crawl along grassy areas which is good from a survival perspective but for me personally it is tedious as fuck because it takes like 10,000 years to get anywhere and with the size of the game map and the distance between settlements half the time you spend wandering around either lost or slowly trekking to the next settlement.
In earlier versions you started with a gun, obviously with noise gunshots attract zombies. The zombies glitch really bad and what is the most annoying aspect of the game for me is that you start the game with no weapons and see if a zombie sees you
1. you can't attack it
2. you can't escape
If a zombie sees you, you have to run and let me assure you the zombies do not give up easily. Basically they would chase you to the end of time itself and then they hit you and you start to bleed and eventually die. It's extremely annoying. Also the zombies for a while had this habit of when they see you they literally rocket through the air heading away from you and then zoom straight towards you.
It's not really fair being an alpha game to make some of these criticisms but it's just stuff to be made aware of when you play. I've had characters lost, items dropped disappear or fall through the scenery. For a while there was aproblem where zombies could see you through doors and walls which made hiding in buildings pointless.
Like apart from these criticisms it's worth playing but i don't really invest too much time into it. There are some really funny videos out there on DayZ about coordinated killing of other players and stuff.
The PVP aspect is good but as with these games they attract the "generic 14 year old call of duty fan" who thinks the game is solely a pvp game where you run around and kill everyone. It's fair enough to play like that but when i first started playing most people helped eachother and now i would say 80% of people shoot you on sight.
The first time i died i heard shots ran over, i had just spawned and had nothing and the guy just shot me in the face. I didn't even have anything but this is just the way it goes.
...and yeah Probable Muppet if you wanna play give me a shout on steam and i will happily play - just please don't pick a server at night - at night time to all those who don't know you can't see anything. It's literally pitch black, even turning up brightness, gamma, whatever doesn't make it easier.

Yeah, I'm having a blast.
Really the only thing that annoys me is the inventory screen, it is incredibly clunky. Unfortunately though I think that it's just an Arma II issue, so it will never get fixed.
Zombies don't really bother me. Especially at the beginning, I have nothing and don't mind if I die really. I am often running through the countryside with 3 zombies on my tail. You can get rid of them pretty easy though just running indoors or break line of site by doing a figure 8 pattern around 2 buildings. Also, people tend to leave you alone when you have a parade of zombies running after you lol.
I am a little concerned about the kill on site mentality though. They really need to add some sort of incentive to the game to encourage people to team up. It makes people like myself who would otherwise team up with people too defensive when encountering another player, it's just safer to shoot people. Kinda sucks...
On another note, I really liked this guys tactics (the No guy lol)
