From http://www.rpgamer.com/news/Q2-2012/062512a.html

At VanaFest 2012 in Japan, Square Enix revealed the fifth expansion to Final Fantasy XI with the upcoming release Seekers of Adoulin. This update will be released in 2013 on Xbox 360 and PC worldwide, but only Japan will receive the PlayStation 2 version.

Seekers will take players west to venture into new lands and encounter all new beastmen. Early talk is that exploration and discovering new areas will be a large focus in this expansion. There are also two new jobs to unlock in the Adoulin expansion: Geomancer and Rune Fencer. Geomancers will use Vana'diel's elemental forces to both aid allies and to take down foes. The Rune Fencer job harnesses arcane ruins for both offensive and defensive effects in combat.

More details will be revealed between now and the expansion's 2013 release, but we have some new media in the meantime.

And on a side note, founding Squaresoft member and original producer of Final Fantasy XI Hiromichi Tanaka has left Square Enix. The official reason for this departure has been listed as health reasons. Akihiko Matsui will be replacing Tanaka on Final Fantasy XI and will be splitting his time between this and Final Fantasy XIV.

So, does anyone on here even play this game?

I'm sure most of us do. I'm not one of them, though. I severely want to play and beat FF 7, but until then, I can't say I'm a true fan.

Very much doubt that as it is an MMO. Pretty much the reason I've never played it and have no plans to play it.

I can't believe FFXI is still going. I've never met a single person that's played it.

Kinda hard when they don't get out of their basements.

I think it's funny that they're updating XI while XIV is still such a shit title that they can't even charge a subscription for it. Does this mean they've given up on fixing it entirely?

Not that it's my problem. I never bought either of the games.

That's pretty funny, it might as well be one of those Facebook games you always see ads for.

apparently FFXIV is supposed to get a huge reboot/patch pretty soon to try to win back old subscribers. it will still be free to play, but they are still trying to win customers over.

A dude down the hall my freshman year played Final Fantasy XI. He was a pretty normal guy - may not have done much studying, but he hung out with us, worked out, went to parties, and other normal dude activities - but I always got the impression from him that the game was pretty hardcore. On a rare occasion he would pull all-nighters with other internet acquaintances.

Kind of interesting to fresh content for a game released in 2002. I definitely appreciate games that have a long lifespan, but I guess it takes a hardcore mindset to be in a game for a decade.
