I don't think it's strictly graphics that led to the decline in horror games, but I think it's a contributing factor in many cases. The lighting in games like REmake, Amnesia, and Dead Space, and the environmental effects in games like Condemned and Cryostasis both added some great atmosphere (not to mention sound design in all four), but I do acknowledge that being able to show every little detail takes away some of the uncertainty and suspense that some earlier games evoked. This is especially apparent in the HD re-release of SH2/3, where they took out the games' signature fog and film grain to reveal the low-res textures and border boxes for the town.
One thing that's a problem in horror games is pacing. Dead Space has a problem with this. You were attacked in almost every room, and you could pretty much guess where enemies would pop out (those grates for example), and you were in danger in pretty much every room. It was actually some of the quieter spots in games like Silent Hill (namely SH2's opening) and Amnesia that creeped me out the most, because it keeps you from developing some rote routine of expectations for combat.

Yeah i heard bad things about the HD Collection, i was actually going to buy it too. I've only played like 33mins of Dead Space, after seeing the footage of Dead Space 3 i thought i should defo give it another go. It definitely had a good few jump scares even in the short amount of time i played but if you are saying it becomes predictable then maybe that will die off.

I didn't mean to sound down on Dead Space. Basic combat gets repetitive (in DS1 at least. DS2 has better pacing), but when you're in zero gravity rooms with enemies jumping every which way, it gets insanely tense, not to mention the great boss fights. Then there are the pseudo-invincible enemies later in the game that you have to avoid or kill creatively. My favorite part in the series is in Dead Space 2, where they introduce these Raptor-like hunter creatures that are among the smartest enemies I've seen in a game. They come in maze-like sections and will hide around corners and mess with you while you fight them. Dead Space kind of keeps a routine combat and will either occasionally go slower or faster from there.
I guess you have to use other games to gauge Dead Space. For example, Call of Duty always has the dial at 11 to keep you glued to all of the uh-splosions, while Silent Hill has it at zero to reel you in and dials it up to 6 or 7 to mess with you. Dead Space kind of keeps it at five, and will occasionally drop to 0 (for story reasons) and up to 11 (for the aforementioned tense zero-gravity/boss fights/creative sections). Dead Space 1 was a neat experiment, and a great change of pace during a span of samey-ness in gaming, but it had some (forgivable) flaws. Dead Space 2 was much better written with better pacing, but I'd recommend both to anyone.

Oh, the stalkers. Probably one of the best enemies that I've ever faced off against in a game. You walk into a room and hear those velociraptor sounds, you know that things are about to get crazy. I want more of that in my horror games.

I'm usually a generation behind so the release of the Wii U means I can start to focus on the Wii. I'm looking forward to Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Muramasa: The Demon Blade. If I was actually up to date on my consoles, that Project P-100 (working title) games looks like fun.

I also really enjoy all the fanboys arguing about why their favorite system had the best showing. It's so pointless... like arguing which NFL team had the best draft. Besides, Nintendo obviously won. Playstation and Xbox are shit.

Probably because Nintendo actually announces games. I don't own a Wii, but I'd probably be excited if I owned one watching their conferences. Maybe I could get excited if Sony and MS would announce something besides multimedia, sports crap, and uninteresting motion control games.

Skip to 3:50. From this it looks like Survival Horror won't be returning just yet.
Co-op looks cool though - even though that goes against Survival Horror i enjoy co-op games which is why i sort of liked RE5. Though i think the guy said Co-Op was available meaning that maybe you don't have to use it? I don't know.
The environment was pretty cool too.

I think the more traditional element of survival horror is supposed to be reserved for Leon's story so don't lose hope just yet. October 2nd can't come fast enough but I just have the nagging feeling they'll delay it at some point. Which would be especially shitty since they moved the date up.

I'm not saying it looks bad, it looks really good but it just doesn't have the survival horror elements from what i've seen. I suppose if Leons is more that then everyone will be happy.

Okay, so having watched the development trailer for ZombiU, I have to say that I no longer think it sounds terribly interesting. The whole "death is permanent" mechanic seemed like a cool idea, but having just watched the developer trailer, it seems to me that it's A) way too easy to die (one bite kills you) and B) that you can't progress in the game until you get the essential gear back from your previously dead character. At first that sounded kind of neat, but the guy playing the dev trailer died three times. That means that three times, he had to start back at the game's beginning point, and walk through the same nursery to get to the same objective points. It basically forces you to play the game over again as many times as you die, and according to the dev that IGN was talking to, surviving for 20 minutes is apparently impressive. On top of that, I can see how a particularly difficult section in the game could get you stuck in a permanent loop, since dying makes you lose all of the abilities and equipment you've accumulated as one character. It sounds like a tedious pain in the ass at best and a game breaker at worst.

In Roguelikes you can typically survive one hit. One bite from the zombies and you lose in this game. Besides, the action is entirely different.

So is that it? Is it over? I didn't follow E3 and just let you guys post all the good stuff here as my source for news. Going by that, it doesn't seem like anything at all happened at E3. Seems like it was just a couple extended trailers for some games we already knew were coming out. Or am I wrong and people were too lazy to update this thread with all the big announcements?

Too lazy, i'll post the announcements that most people were excited about here:
I guess this is the new survival horror!

Out of all that content, I'm actually more excited about The Last of Us than I am about AC III. That said, I'm amazed at how much mobility the assassin has in the woods.

I'm excited about everything on Wii U, except maybe ME3.

Yeah. I've decided that I pretty much have to own The Last of Us. It looks absolutely stunning.

Holy shit. Last of Us does look great. I kind of want this console generation to keep going, now that we're getting some new IPs. I don't want to go through the graphical growing pains of another console generation right now.

And considering how stunning the graphics are getting on this generation, it kind of feels like they haven't even lived up to their full potential yet. The Last of Us is probably one of the most impressive graphical displays I've seen yet.

I meant in the sense of the graphics race we saw in the beginning of this generation. Granted, I appreciate the leap from Call of Duty 2 to The Last of Us, but it's been nice lately to see the engine race slow down so we can release some cool-ass games instead of glorified tech demos.

I've been following The Last of Us ever since the cover story for Game Informer, it looks like it's going to be so amazing. I appreciated a lot of the interactions between Joel and Ellie in the gameplay trailer (like when Joel ran out of ammo and Ellie threw a brick at that guy's face).
I wish it was coming out on 360, though.
