Everything I've seen of this game has really gotten me interested until this trailer. Now that I have more to go on and seeing the actual game, it's not turning out the way I imagined it would be. It almost looks like a teen horror movie, like a bunch of college kids are on spring break and one by one they're getting killed off. Not digging Laura's personality either and the ridiculous, over-the-top action really pulls me out of it, but then again, this is Square Enix afterall. I haven't even touched a Tomb Raider after TRII and I thought this game might change that. Unfortunately I'm having my doubts now.
Shake it, Quake it, Space Kaboom.

Yea, I am in a similar boat. TRII was the last one I really touched.
But I really dug the Uncharted games, and this seems to borrow a lot from that, while pushing the darkness.
I dunno, I am sure we will see more at E3 next week. I thought it was a pretty epic buildup for her to finally pick up a pistol, but the bow and arrow looked cool.
I never really cared much about the Tomb Raider games. I've played demos here and there, and it just felt so defiant to change some of the worst of the platforming/combat mechanics. Not to mention Lara is completely uninteresting as a character. She's this super rich, powerful brat who goes around the world finding weirdly preposterous reasons to murder people and wildlife. Then the games got weird with the last reboot trilogy where people were going super-saiyan with Viking gloves and Welsh swords or something, and Lara was trying to rescue her mother from an alternate dimension.
That said, it really looks like they're trying something new with this game. I saw a gameplay demonstration that mixed platforming and puzzles that looked pretty seamless and fun. The biggest difference I noticed is that Lara seems like a human fucking being for once. She's not a constant jack-off fantasy who runs out of giant gunfights and huge jumps unscathed and un-soiled, blathering out "witty" one-liners while stealing and destroying priceless historical antiquities. It's neat that they're going with a tough-spirited but physically vulnerable female character instead of more male murder-brosephs. I'll check in on the game from time to time.
So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

It can't be any worse than Dark Angel.

I agree with this, for the most part. It's an unusual portrayal of a woman in gaming that's a little refreshing, especially given Lara's history as wank bait. It's frankly amazing to me just how many people are pissed off about her not looking like a bimbo anymore. My only complaint is that this franchise seems to have absolutely nothing to do with the original material, which kind of makes the Tomb Raider title feel tacked on. I don't care about the character makeover (that I'm actually welcoming), so much as the implication that while this looks like a pretty interesting game on its own, it has to borrow a franchise title to sell. Game companies don't seem to want to take risks with new ideas, and that's bad for the industry as a whole.
Greg, I have to ask: what's your feeling about Uncharted? Some of your comments seem like they could be directed at that franchise.

I like Uncharted. It tries so earnestly to be fun, and mostly is. I wish it was a little less simple and easy in the platforming department, but I love the combat unconditionally. Writing-wise, Drake, Elena, and most villains are intensely uninteresting to me, but I love many of the characters, especially Sully, Tenzen, Cutter, and Chloe. They kept getting close with making Drake interesting, but I guess if they showed any vulnerability in the guy, all of the nerds would start screaming and call him "emo" or some bullshit.
As for taking risks with the franchises, I can understand them here. They'll sell a lot of copies based on name alone, and if that name is tacked on to something really well made, I don't care either way.
