With the 2012 election coming up this fall, I felt it was appropriate to start this.

And to begin, Obama made a stunning statement about gay marriage.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/05/14/obama-calls-for-repeal-defense-marriage-act-while-touting-support-for-gay/

Anyone think this will hurt or help his chances?

Mitt Romney is attacking his economic policies in return.

Stunning statement? More like trying to buy votes with no intention of doing anything. If he cared as much as he claims to he'd have done something about it in his first term.

Well it is still ballsy to do in an election year, and I'm glad to see a President finally take a stand on gay marriage. I really did not expect him to openly give his opinion until after the election.

I agree that I wish Obama had done more concerning this subject over the last three years, but then again there's a ton of stuff he promised to the left that hasn't been done. All this talk about how he's so fucking liberal is laughable--he's been very moderate overall.

I'm still a big Obama fan and 99% sure I'll be voting for him. Mitt Romney is awful.

I don't know, man. What if Romney picks a Latino as Vice President? Won't that sway your vote???

I know Romney sure hopes so...if polls are correct he's winning like 15% of the Hispanic vote right now. I can't wait to see what demo he panders to with his choice.

Yeah I'm not going to vote for either of them. I don't believe Obama at all anymore and Romney is just looking worse and worse in my eyes. No idea who I'll vote for at this point, but I can't imagine anything that would get me to vote for either of those two. I guess if I'm pissing away my vote I might as well vote for a cartoon character or dead celebrity though, so maybe John Wayne because a dead Duke is better than my other two options.

Pretty much where I'm at.

So I'm actually living politics in the 2012 cycle, which ironically means that I'm not keeping up with the news like I usually do.

I gotta give props to Romney for sticking to what he knows best. It's a smart move for him.

However, I'll probably vote for Obama primarily because he really hasn't done much the past four years and that's fine by me for another four years lol.

If by that you mean "changing his platform whenever it's convenient for him" then he's sticking to it quite well.

Don't forget selective amnesia whenever anyone asks him about something he did in the past that might make him look bad. "I don't remember that." "Oh? Well we have several people who witnessed it, still don't remember?" "No." Then if they keep pressing he changes the subject to being about how his wife made him a better person. He's such a joke.

I just meant that focusing on economics is clever. We all know his social stances are inconsistent at best. He made a living working economics, so it's what he knows best.

Again, though, his economic policies in Mass. were much different than what he's been proposing so far. It's clever for him to focus on economics because that's what people are upset about right now, not because he's anymore consistent on that front.

Eeeegg-zactly

In fact, I think I read recently that the latest polls in the general public are about 50% in favor of gay marriage and about 48% against. I guess that's why Obama is suddenly so openly in favor of it. It seems like just a couple years ago a majority of Americans were against gay marriage and so Obama was kind of on defense about it. Strange how politicians work isn't it? Remember, Obama only cares about one thing. Getting re-elected.

Yeah, I hate it when politicians follow the will of the people on social issues. Who do they think they are? Our representatives or something?

Bumping this because Romney has declared Paul Ryan as his running mate.

I'm not convinced that Ryan was the most prudent choice. He's effectively shifted the focus from the economy to budgetary concerns and entitlement reform, which is much shakier ground for him.

I'm very pleased with the choice, as it refocuses things away from negative ads towards the most important issue: the economy (which is entwined with entitlement payments/the budget). This election has to be the choice between two ideological options: unsustainable big government debt vs. fiscal solvency.

More accurately between two different visions of how fiscal solvency can be achieved. But either way, I welcome a shit to a more substantive campaign.

If I thought Ryan's plan had even a prayer of working or being feasible, then maybe I'd be with you Cattivo. As it is, I feel like this VP choice is little more than posturing to the base.

Way to paint the picture fair and balanced, How about we make this about two white dudes who love their country versus two terrorists? Paul Ryan had his ridiculous budget criticized from Reagan's former economic adviser, he has been blasted by his own church cardinals for trying to put the economic burden on the poor and he is very friendly with the gays. This guy will cost Romney the election, in Florida the elderly don't like little douches fucking with their medicare.

As for fiscal solvency, give it a rest. You know who else was fiscally solvent, Hoover. Had we left the chaotic economic policies of GW and Paul Ryan in place the middle class would be flat lined and not just in a coma. This election is about a conservative right leaning Democrat versus a conservative left leaning Republican. Obama is a centrist, as is Romney but Romney has to answer to the Tea Party lunatics that have fucked up the Republican party beyond repair.

I cannot stand Obama. With his constant use of the word "folks", he comes off as a condescending douchebag.

That being said, I don't think a ticket featuring two white guys can/will ever win the White House again.
