Words that someone could view as "annoying" or "offensive" on Facebook or Twitter, for example, could be deemed a criminal offense under a bi-partisan bill that's moving swiftly to Gov. Jan Brewer's desk.
The bill would update telephone harassment and stalking laws by adding the use of computers or smartphones.

Guys, it means "offend or annoy" in a legal sense. Not in a conventional sense. I've seen the text, it just extends a law that applies to phone calls to the internet.

Think internet harassment, or cyberbullying. Not just being an asshole online.

Sure, but the language in the bill leaves it open to interpetation. Sort of a SOPA deal. It's clear that it isn't MEANT to shut down things like comment sections, but the possibility is there.

Nobody's going to shut down comment sections. Good grief, people Rolling Eyes

Of course it's not that the internet has ever overreacted about something essentially nonthreatening before...

No, it is not open to interpretation, at least not by people who matter. People who work with the law know what the law means. And again, this is a law that has been in place for a while and is probably on the books in every state being updated for modern times. When was the last time you got arrested for calling someone a dickhead online, or "annoying" them by calling when they were asleep?

It's a non-issue that some smart guy looked at and decided to spread around out of context.

Phone calls and verbal communications are not legally allowed to be recorded without consent. Online posts are. They are "in writing" which makes them easier to prove in court. Also, even if you try to erase what you write online, the internet archive and other caching services makes it harder than ever to actually make that happen.

And written communications have always been more tightly regulated than non-verbal ones.

So...not seeing the issue here.

I fail to see your point - if a non-crime is or isn't recorded, who cares?

What if they didn't prosecute because the crimes could never be proven with evidence and now they can?

What if, what if, what if...it doesn't matter. Who cares? What does that have to do with the law at all?

It is not illegal to swear at someone over the telephone. What is illegal is to make constant, obscene, harassing phone calls. That is the behavior that is being made illegal online. And if it's easier to catch someone doing that online, great.

You can't charge someone criminally for annoying you, GPF. There are a ton of Supreme Court cases that decided that a long time ago.

I swear, anyone wants to do anything about the internet, or even extend pre-existing laws to the internet, and everyone loses their shit. It's ridiculous.
