Wii news at DC-Emu reports that the Wii has undergone motherboard changes in Japan to prevent the current crop of mod chips available for the console.

Three pins from have been physically cut from a surface-mounted IC, which ensures the mod chips aren't able to function.

Modders are expected to either get round the problem, or produce new chips that circumvent the IC.

Modding consoles is kind of what killed the first XBox. People just bought junked ones, put in a little work, and viola! A console that plays every game imaginable including ripped XBox games. I think Nintendo is smart for circumventing the immense loss of profit while they can. They're probably worried that at SOME point PS3 might turn a profit and then they're screwed. If that day ever comes...

How many modded XBoxes were there, really? It's not a threat, it's not just "Viola!", you have to bust open the XBox, and solder shit to the board, not to mention that if you go online online with a modded XBox, you're banned from Live for life. I know, I know, there was an "off" switch for the mod chips, but Microsoft found a way around that.

It was modding that made the XBox popular though. Before people realized they could mod it and put all sorts of cool shit like emulators on there, they only people buying it were frat boys and 30 year old accountants. Onces techies saw the potential it had, the system began to gain a real following.

The mod community for the XBox is small, minute on the large scale of all things XBox. What made it a popular console was Microsofts stranglehold on the online console gaming scene.

You can game online on the PS2, but it's nothing like Xbox live.

PSO was the best MMO ever.

The Gamecube servers shut down on May first, I think it was. The Xbox PSO servers are still alive, but they've had their Christmas motif going since Christmas '05, they never got another update after that. The Dreamcast servers are still up in Japan, but the US servers were shutdown late last year. And PSO Blue Burst (PSO PC) is still alive, barely.

PSU has been out since like, late October. I gave it a go on the PS2/PC side, but it got old FAST.

1. it is possible to make software modifications to an Xbox without opening up the xbox even once.

2. there are dozens and dozens of Mock Xbox live servers that modded gamers can game on,free of charge.

I played it on the 360 and on the PS2, and you are right. The game does get old fast. While some of the new things are neat, such as aiming while using a gun or bow, it doesn't compare to PSO. I'll stick with Blue Burst any day of the week.

It got old fast because all you did was Lab Recovery, or Crimson Beast.

I've been thinking about getting Blue Burst, and hopping on a free server lately. I miss the good ol' days of PSY on the Dreamcast.
