So, I recently had heart surgery and while I was recovering I got a bug up my ass to start collecting and playing some of the games that I grew up with. I bought a Yobo FC3 (plays NES, SNES, & Genesis) and a couple games and things have pretty much gone downhill from there. I decided to use this space to show off some of the stuff I'm able to track down, so you guys can watch my collection grow with me. I hope this thread inspires some fun conversation, whether it's reminiscing about your favorite part of a game I've found or suggestions for stuff to look out for. I'll also post my own thoughts/Klassix Memories™ on some of the games. I'll start off with my haul from The Exchange today:

NES Advantage arcade joystick (lol goatsebusters)
F-Zero for SNES (complete in box with manual)
Ms. Pac-Man for Genesis (complete in box with manual)
Tecmo Baseball for NES (complete in box with manual)
Golgo 13 for NES (complete in box)
I don't really plan on being anal about getting boxed NES and SNES games, but I do plan to seek out the nicest carts I can, preferably with sleeves/covers. I'm glad I got the box for F-Zero, though - it has a sweet cartoon on the back. I bought Ms. Pac-Man because I actually had this game as a kid, and I really loved it - but not as much as my sister! I think she played it more than I did, she certainly played it more than any other Genesis game we had. I remember this had a really bitchin' two-player mode, I can't wait to try it out again with one of my buddies after all these years.
The Advantage was dirt cheap. It was in overall nice physical shape but almost all of the buttons would stick. I disassembled and cleaned the entire thing tonight; it looks like someone poured an entire freaking can of Coke on the thing twenty-odd years ago. If it works, awesome - I'll write up a nice tutorial with pics for you guys. If not, I'll probably just turn it into a lamp.

Also The Exchange is a bitchin' place to get games. I went to like three of them when I vacationed in Cincinnati last summer.

The Exchange is pretty great but that damn sticker residue is tough as hell to remove. There's another one in Cleveland that's also really close to a store called Big Fun that I'll check out this weekend.

I wish we had a good place outside of video game stores to buy stuff where I live. My only hope of a deal is to go to garage sales. Although I can get a good price on some stuff at one store that doesn't differentiate price between loose carts and CIB games.

Sticker residue drives me fucking insane. I usually have luck with a minimal amount of goo gone though.

Goo Gone works great, just be careful with some NES games because it can stain the label.

Oh I am very careful to avoid damaging labels I have seen too many destroyed ones to allow myself to be part of the problem. Luckily more of my local game stores are atleast smart enough to keep the sticker off of the fron of the label, although some of them do put it so it goes over the end label a bit, which really infuriates me. An nes game is has soooo much area not covered with 20+ year old stickers why the fuck would anyone risk ruining them by putting a sticker on it?

That's a good start to your collection. As for the NES Advantage, I have about two dozen of them and at least 60 percent of them have sticky buttons, and they are very clean. I think it has something to do with how they were constructed. I never thought of making a lamp out of any of them. Maybe I will do that when I finally put together my game room.

Look what was waiting for me when I got home from work today!
Uh, well, let's see what that looks like after digging through some tape and packing peanuts...
I scored an NES, nine games, a Game Genie, and a crappy joystick. The games are:
Adventure Island
Bubble Bobble
Contra
Kirby's Adventure
Mega Man 2
Rad Racer (with manual)
Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt
Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
So the games seem to work fine, but the NES usually needs a little coaxing to get them to play, and once it does the quality of the graphics gradually decay until the game freezes...I wonder what's going on? The joystick's top button does not work, and I haven't figured out how to use the Game Genie yet. As for my Advantage, everything works great except for the Turbo buttons...I'll have to look at a manual and crack it open to investigate further.

I used a game genie a long time ago once. I heard rumors that it can fuck up an NES. I never had that problem though.

Don't worry about the Game Genie screwing up your NES. If you don't use the "under the shirt" trick, start. Place the game under your shirt, tees work the best, and blow back and forth for about 5 seconds. Pop game in system. Hit power button. Adjust game to the right or left, hit reset. Game starts normally.
You may also want to buy a new pin connector online and replcace your current one.
You can also just google some old game genie codes as well as some that people have created.

Whatever you do, make sure you don't break the plastic flap off the Game Genie. I remember when I had the NES Game Genie a long time ago...and after a few weeks, the damn plastic end broke off... From then on it was a major hassle to take out the NES cart along with the Game Genie...

Make sure not to break off any buttons on your controllers, or you won't be able to play. I remember I did that and I couldn't jump in Blaster Master!!! Fucking Plutonium Boss!!!
