Will it be a straight port with online multiplayer or an HD "remake"? Wasn't a fan of what they did to Turtles In Time.

I'm hoping for just a straight port with multiplayer. It'll make me stiff.

sweet. this hits the PSN next week:

It's no secret that many of us here at 1UP reserve a special place in our hearts for The Simpsons. As various degrees of kids throughout the 80s and 90s, the show appealed to us as the very definition of smart, edgy, and refreshingly honest satire on all things Americana.
A few years back, Features Admiral Bob Mackey wrote a plethora of blog entries on the series' sordid history in video games. Alongside that, Retronauts recently devoted an entire episode chronicling the highs (there were a few) and lows (there were many) of the video game adaptations. And from that discussion stemmed two truths about The Simpsons that were widely accepted amongst the group.
1) The show has been on a steady downward spiral for the past 15 years.
2) The Simpsons Arcade Game is pretty much the greatest thing ever.
The 4-player beat 'em up was jammed pack with cooperative goodness and more references to the show that you could shake a monkey's paw at. Outside of a horrid iOS port, The Simpsons Arcade Game has been pretty much absent from the modern gaming space. Unless you could track down an opium den containing an arcade cabinet, you're left to just imagine how awesome the game was.
That's why the news that Sony is releasing the game on PSN next month is so many different kinds of amazing. What's even better is that as of February 7th, the game is going to be FREE to PlayStation Plus Members. Here's to hoping that is also comes with free frogurt...just so long as the frogurt isn't cursed... |

it hits xbox this friday:

First off, the Simpsons has only been declining for about 12 years. If the show had ended with "Behind The Laughter" in 2000, that would have been a flawless run.
Secondly, I saw it reported on some site that the game would include the "rare" Japanese ROM of the game. Why do I care? How is the Japanese ROM different, if at all?

As a bonus, you can unlock a character guide, vintage promotional material and best of all: the unreleased-in-the-U.S. Japanese version that slightly tweaks the gameplay. |

I didn't know about the Japanese version, either. This article says:

There's also a Japanese version of the arcade machine with a few minor differences. Its difficulty setting seems to be lower, and health ups seemingly a tad more plentiful. You also get much higher scores in the Japanese version, and extra points are rewarded based on how much health you have left after finishing a stage. Finally, the Japanese release allows you to jump while armed with melee weapons, whereas that's not possible in the American version. |

Yep. The Japanese rom of X-Men was also included in the live release, too.

I will probably scoop this up in the future when it is inevitably discounted.
Four player local should be a fun romp.

It is just the old ROMs with netplay and achievements. No updated graphics or anything. You can play local or online.
There are a few different modes of play. Team quarters lets all players share a pool of 40 credits to use for continuing. Quarters is each player gets 10 credits. Free play is unlimited continues and Survival is one credit, one life, no continues.
Once you beat the game for the first time you unlock the Japanese ROM. Beating the game with each character opens up the extras. Beating the game with Bart lets you view game related art, Homer lets you view a guide to in-game appearances of Springfield characters, Marge lets you unlock the sound test and Lisa gives you access to the music test.
