All morning long I have been contemplating the McDonald's mascots of my youth, and in my contemplation, I have spent much time wondering what the fuck Grimace was supposed to be. Therefore, like any sane person, I turned to the McDonaldland article on wikipedia.
According to the wiki: "There are some theories that Grimace has a mental disability, possibly down-syndrome. No one really knows what Grimace in intended to represent, some say a large retarded plum, a purple McNugget, or a mix between Sarah Jessica Parker, Butterbean, and the purple Tellatubby. In recent years, Grimace has taken a hit publicly for his role in the September 11th attacks on the United States. Ronald McDonald has since disowned him as a friend and banished him from McDonalds."

Grimace originally was a villain, and in his early incarnations he had lots of arms, which he used to steal shakes. So there you go, he was the Shakeburglar.
