After a lengthy period of litigation, Bethesda Softworks has fully claimed the rights to the Fallout license in a settlement with Interplay. When Bethesda originally purchased the Fallout rights, it agreed to allow Interplay to keep the rights to create a Fallout MMORPG, with the provision that Interplay secured thirty million dollars in financing and began full-scale development on the game by April, 2009.

As Interplay's general progress on Fallout Online could be summarized by the game's official website, Bethesda sued to void that agreement in 2009. The suit has now been settled in Bethesda's favor. Bethesda will pay two million dollars of "consideration" to Interplay, and Interplay is no longer allowed to develop any games under the Fallout licence. According to the original agreement, Interplay is allowed to sell the early Fallout games until 2013, at which point all Fallout rights are transferred to Bethesda.

At this point, Bethesda has made no announcements about any upcoming Fallout games, with the exception of the Ultimate Edition of Fallout: New Vegas. We don't know whether Bethesda plans to develop its own Fallout MMORPG, but it certainly has plans to continue developing games under the Fallout license.

If anyone's disappointed by the lack of a Fallout MMO, they can play http://mmohuts.com/review/fallen-earth for a shoddy 3rd person perspective knockoff of what it might be like. I deleted it a few minutes after playing myself!

I'm saddened that Interplay lost the license that they used to make two of the greatest games of all time, but between one shitty hack-and-slash, a third game that never got released, and an MMO that probably would have been cancelled down the line anyway, Bethesda's handling of the license (be it they or Obsidian developing) might be the best thing to happen to the license since Tactics. Still a huge shame, though.

Sad, but a Fallout MMO would have been stupid anyway so I'm glad they didn't waste the money. Seriously in an MMO you couldn't blow up a whole city or murder everyone in it on a whim. Hopefully though Bethseda learns to make the next Fallout game more like New Vegas than Fallout 3 though, because 3 wasn't very much fun and Vegas kicked some ass. Vegas was much closer to the originals in my opinion, at least as close as you can get by changing it into an FPS with RPG elements.

I really don't understand why people are so down on Fallout 3. I guess it got really easy really quickly, but beyond that, I thought it was much more atmospheric than New Vegas. I guess it could have used a few more settlements or a greater sense of "There are still non-crazy people" but it was still a solid game that required quite a risk on Bethesda's part.

FO3 was completely dead, if I ran into 30 people after leaving the vault I'd be surprised. I get that it is post-apocalyptic but damn there need to be some people at least. That is my main problem with it, my other problems with it are that almost everything gets done in the subways/sewers and they weren't very varied at all and the whole world was shades of grey practically, it was really depressing. You can argue that it should be a little depressing but I think New Vegas pulled it off without painting the whole world grey.

It is great that the series got revived but I think Bethesda can do it even better in the next game now that they've got an idea what to do.

New Vegas was a good apology for how shit fallout 3 was, but it was still boring as fuck compared to Skyrim. Yeah I know NV was made by Obsidian either way I didn't really like the 3d fallouts. Bethesda needs to stick to high fantasy, they can fuck off with post apocalyptic games.

I completely agree. New Vegas was good, but Fallout 3 really nailed the atmosphere in a much better way. The music was perfect, the DC design was awesome and it was nice to see more of America than the Core Region. Besides, it makes some sense that the population is small. In a nuclear war, DC would get carpet nuked.

Fallout 3 had its shortcomings, but it was a huge risk on Bathesda's part, and they still made an incredible game. Now that the gamble has paid off for them, you can pretty much bet that development for Fallout 4 will be comparable to that of Skyrim. It's one of their two biggest franchises, and I have a feeling that their next entry is going to be pretty epic.

Yeah Fallout 3 really captured the atmosphere of a bleak future with its retarded kiddie birthday intro and by treating me like a baby who doesn't understand rpgs. Ok in all honesty it wasn't awful but it was definitely dumbed down from the first two games.

I keep starting Fallout 3 because I hear that it's great and can never make it past a mission or two. I find the entire thing so tedious and also I need to be the perfect stat warrior which makes it even worse.

I actually almost traded in Fallout 3 at first (something I almost never do with games), but then I started reading up on special weapons and armor on the wiki, and got interested in collecting them. This turned into an obsession with finding every little locale and wandering across the empty wastes. After I got over my fanboyism, it's become a game I go back to every once in a while, and I stand by my opinion that Point Lookout is one of the best parts of the entire franchise.
