I remember that critique of Green Day from back in the day. Although, back then, people said all their songs were based on the same three chords. I don't know anything about the guitar. All I know is that when I saw them in concert in '01 they kicked ass.
I of course don't like them now, Minority and every album since has sucked, and they've compensated by going political.
Another example of two songs that sound eerily similar, is the recent single from the band, The Dreaming. They're the successor band to Stabbing Westward, having the same lead singer, Chris Hall, and their drummer is Johnny Haro of Econoline Crush fame.
The single is Every Trace, and the beginning sounds too much like Marilyn Manson's Beautiful People:

I don't hate Green Day by any means. I haven't listened to them past American Idiot but the patterns they use are ridiculously simple. Not all their songs use the same chords as i posted. The chords in the examples were all Db5, Gb5 and Ab5. They do obviously use other chords but those where basically the main riffs/hooks. There are other chords used which follow the same patterns.

I think the industry term for that is "Punk".
Not that I dislike the stuff. The Ramones were even worse about it. I swear that band only did about 5 actual songs. The rest are just recycles.

I thought the Ramones were awesome.

They are. But their style isn't exactly diverse.

See, I like the Ramones style punk. A catchy riff, a catchy chorus. Yes, that's what rock and roll is supposed to be about.
I don't like the style of punk that bands like Anti-Flag, Black Flag, and the Sex Pistols play. It's angry, talentless noise.
I like the Sex Pistols because I find that they can have an angry message behind it, yet still be catchy as hell. I agree with you on stuff like Anti-Flag though. I find it somewhat scary to listen to.
Another good band is the Descendants. Catchy stuff yet it's still got the speed and edge of punk.
I'm glad I finally found someone that shares my stance on this.

The Descendents are good. So is Bad Religion, if you're going for that sort of thing.
I'm with Syd here. I don't care much for 80s punk. I do like the Sex Pistols, but a lot of bands out of the 80s just made a lot of noise.

This was probably intentional, but the first minute or so of GNR's Breakdown sounds like an awful lot like The Garden.

Three songs that mesh so well, the DJ didn't really have to do anything to mash them:

The Ting Tings do a lot of that stuff. Their song Shut Up and Let me Go is a dead ringer for Blondie's Rapture, if not in sound than in spirit

Another one people like to point out is Green Day's "American Idiot" has some similarities to "Doublewhiskeynoice" by The Dillinger Four. "Idiot" was released 6 years after "Double..." and just 4 years after Billy did a split album with D4 while in a side project called Pinhead Gunpowder.
So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

Glad I wasn't the only one who thought of that one. Another one:
