For me it was Lufia 1. I only played the game once when it first came out but didn't own it until recently. I liked it a lot at first but I enjoyed it less and less as the game went on. The battles were just way too frequent and way too easy. It just became more tedious than anything else. I maxed out all my party members to level 99 long before I reached the end of the game.

I own both of them and I'd agree that 2 really refined the game, but Dark Cloud is still fun as hell and worth the play.
The last true RPG I beat was FF XIII. It would be Dark Souls if you count a game that mixes leveling up stats with a more hack and slash nature as an RPG of sorts.

I'm playing through it right now. It's not bad, but it's very unforgiving.

I beat Final Fantasy I a few months back, but it wasn't the first time, it was just a quick run through.
The last "new" RPG I beat was Dragon Age Origins.
