Metacritic made a compilation of their year of reviews and scores.

http://www.metacritic.com/feature/best-video-games-of-2011

It doesn't surprise me that the Wii was the losing format this past year. Beyond Skyward Sword, I don't recall anything worthy of notice.

They ran the stat regarding games over 90, but the number of games over 80 seems more relevant to the average consumer. I did a quick check and found the following:

Games with Scores of 80 or Better:
Wii: 8
XBOX 360: 51
PC: 61
PS3: 53
3DS: 10
DS: 10

Nintendo kinda sucked this past year...

Again, the problem isn't Nintendo, it's lack of third party support.

I would guess that Nintendo PUBLISHED as many well-regarded titles as Sony or Microsoft did.

They're in a transitional period right now with their older formats on the way out and the 3DS and the Wii U on the way in. They'll do better next year.

I'm not a bad enough dude, but I am an edgy little shit. I'll do what I can.

Skyward Sword - 93, Kirby - 78... those were the top two Nintendo games for the Wii.

Uncharted 3 - 92, Little Big Planet - 91, Killzone 3 - 84, Resistance 3 - 83, inFamous 2 - 83 those were the top 5 games for Sony.

Wii Release Date: 2006
360 Release Date: 2005
PS3 Release Date: 2006

Its a transition year isn't a reasonable excuse when all hardware is relatively the same age. The fact that Skyward Sword exists as it does is proof that the hardware can still provide games that people like.

Yes but the averaged score isn't far off. When nintendo does well it does very well.

Yeah nintendo needs to get on the ball about some shit.

Has nintendo ever made a bad game? I sure don't think so. And they are definitely a master of marketing.

On this, look at Skyward Sword. It took years to get here from Twilight Princess, but it caused a virtual typhoon when it did. Nintendo takes a lot of time to get the stuff out there, but it's always top quality stuff.

Well, almost always.

Look at the top 10 list:
#1.: Batman = average game with high production values
Skyrim = meh
Portal 2 = no problems with this
Zelda 3DS = a handheld port should not count for best game of another year
Mass Effect 2 = I'll just stick to RE4
Minecraft = Dumb pointless shit

This year sucks. The highly praised Batman game is fucking average. There is no difficulty in combat as it all devolves down to press Y. You won't ever be punished for improperly countering. As for Skyward Sword, I haven't played it but it looks really unattractive and forgettable. Certainly don't think Nintendo deserves these huge ratings for piss-easy Zelda games.

Overall, a very boring year.

I've gotten a grand total of two games released this year! (L.A. Noire and Pokemon White)

On the contrary, though, I've gotten approximately one bajillion used games.

2011 was a great year for PC gaming. In fact, it wasn't a bad year for PS3 either.

2011 releases that I enjoyed:
* Orcs Must Die
* Terraria
* Frozen Synapse
* Bastion

2011 titles I own but have not yet had the time to play:
* The Binding of Isaac
* Deus Ex: Human Revolution
* SpaceChem
* LIMBO

2011 games I want but have a backlog so am waiting for a price drop:
* Assassin's Creed 4
* Skyrim
* Portal 2 - Valve will end up giving this game away within a year anyways
* Trine 2
* L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition

I'll point out that I only posted titles that are rated 83+ on the Metacritic charts. I own a few that are lower rated... like DNF.

Interesting stuff. The only games I've bought new this year that I can remember are Skyrim and Dark Souls. I did pick up a bunch of older games especially when Gamestop had that buy 2 used PS2 games get two free thing going on. I do want to pick up Shogun: Total War 2 and Saints Row: The Third but I'm waiting to buy them until they drop to around 20 bucks or so on a Steam sale. I did buy a PS3 back in February though and seeing that there were a bunch of good games that I haven't played yet gives me a good list to start watching prices on.

I only got Ghost Trick, the Alien game for DS, Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition, Kirby's Epic Yarn (released this year in Europe) and Skyward Sword of games released this year. Makes Nintendo-systems the winner for me as usual, even though there is no doubt that 2011 was a poor year for them.

I love that half the comments on MetaCritic are Skyrim fanboys complaining that it should be Metacritic's GOTY because it has more reviews than Arkham City.

Skyrim should be nowhere near goty after the failure of the PS3-version imo. And the fact that Bethesda got "studio of the year" at the vga's after that failure just says it all about this industry unfortunately Sad

I haven't been following this. Why did the PS3 version "fail"?

It's apparently a little buggier than the other ports and it has issues with saves and lagginess after playing like 80 hours or something. I dunno, I doubt I'll ever play a goddamn game that long anyway and I've seen no issues with it so far.

The saves blow up in size after a while of playing them until the game gets so laggy and unplayable that it freezes up. The game itself has a lot of bugs though, which isn't surprising for Bethesda because they've let modders deal with most of them anyway in past games. The game is good overall but it kinda sucks when you try to buy one of the houses and find the game has glitched and you can no longer purchase it.

I never understood why Bethesda didn't just hire the team making the mods and employ them to keep Oblivion bug free. It wouldn't have cost that much by comparison to the amount the game made.

Probably because if they hired them they'd have to pay them, right now they get their work free of charge. Even if it wouldn't have cost much, it still might be seen as an unnecessary expense. Plus these guys might not have any experience working with the PS3/360 Dev tools. I have no idea if there is a difference between them but I imagine there might be.

The PS3-version is basicaly unplayable after a while, as the game crashes frequently and the frame rate drops toi single-digit levels. I think everybody expects a lot of bugs for games as ambitios as Skyrim, but the PS3-version is simply so bad after a while, that its just inexcusable imo. This is a game designed to play for hundreds of hours - but its more or less impossible to continue after a while on the PS3, which is a big enough bug to not consider them for goty in my opinion. For this reason I will probably wait untill I have a good enough PC to play it - which will probably be a few years from now.

The can but they have a history of not doing so. I keep hearing on their forums that Fallout 3 and New Vegas both have this issue still on the PS3 versions.
