This needs a bump.
I saw this film a few nights ago. It was hard to track down even illegally, but I think it's a fun romp that is worth the watch. I think it beat Kick-Ass to the punch on, and as of yet, forecoming Super Hero movie craze.
I do wonder at some of the casting. Paul Reubens actually. The film could have done better without the Spleen, but his "power" was written in in such a way that it did actually matter. So maybe it's the actor and not the character I have problems with.
Captain Amazing is the Batman of the town. Well casted as Greg Kinnear. Charismatic, loved by the populous, feared by criminals, total douche bag. Exactly what we want from him
Will H Macy as the Shoveler, the family man, is a perfect use of his typecasting while letting him act outside of the box. It's like the wrote the role with him in mind. I like Macy, but he never dominates the camera, steals a role, or is someone I'd see a movie for, and this film didn't change that, but he was the PERFECT as the Shoveler.
The Blue Raja. His accent was getting really annoying, until the reveal. A master of silverwear reminds me of a character a friend of mine created in D&D. A Bard that plays the spoons. So I got the humor in this character. Like the others his "power" was written into the exciting conclusion. not my favorite character.
The Bowler. I think I have a crush on Janeane Garofalo. Definitely during this time period. The daughter's avenging fathers story always reminds me of Chun Li's story. Obviously, I really liked her in the movie. She seemed to be the only one who had any sort of
real power. She also created some snappy dialogue between otehr characters which is always fun.
Invisible Boy. Ah, Kel Mitchell. Will you ever live down All That and Kenan and Kel? No. But he was well cast in this role too. His explanation for his powers and how they work is pretty funny. It's a good pay off to see how it plays out at the end. Did anyone else think of The Never Ending Story at that moment?
Mr. Furious. I'm not a fan of Ben Stiller. I'm really not. The fact he was is in it is why I had not seen the film until a few days ago. This was his film to carry and he did a great job though. Of all teh characters he's especially called out on not having a real power. The DP I hope got paid well because they did some excellent shots when Mr. Furious had to lose it. Stiller's awkward humor is annoying and dull and those were some low points of the film, but when his character needed to show some depth and heart Stiller could pull it off. So I wish I had seen this in its time.
The Sphinx. Wes Studi plays this role. A very well known native american actor who has shown great range in his career. He takes hold of it and runs with it being "mysterious". Mr. Furious wastes now time calling him out and they have a sort of resolution at some point. When he is first brought up in the film I thought it was only to compare how other heros were doing. I didn't think he'd be in the film. He's a guy that always speaks in riddles, which must be a pain when ordering at restaurants, but this really worked for him.
Casanova Frankenstein. Is there anything Geoffrey Rush can't do? I don't think Casanova even has a power. If he does it's like the Voice of Saruman able to sway and manipulate people easily and quickly. This guy IS a scene stealer and is pretty memorable. His name sure is. Great catch for casting Rush.
This brings me to one of the best parts of dialogue the film has. Lance can't be Captain Amazing because Lance wears glasses! Hey, if Clark Kent can fool the world, why can't Lance?
I wish I had seen this film much, much sooner. How did it get forgotten?
