When Kirby's Adventure came out in 1993, all evidence indicated that it was the sequel to Kirby's Dream Land, which had come out the year before. But then, in 1995, the franchise received another installment by the name of Kirby's Dream Land 2. The SNES classic, Kirby Super Star, came out the following year, bringing back and improving upon many mechanics in the late NES classic. The following year, the SNES saw its final releases, Kirby's Dream Land 3 being among them. Three years after that, we got Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, which, though it featured many things prevalent in KDL3, did not include the actual presence of the animal friends, though Kirby could assume their forms with the Stone/Cutter combo. In the next decade, the franchise saw some handheld installments, including a remake of the NES title renamed with "Dream Land". Last year, we got Kirby's Epic Yarn, and very recently, we saw the back-to-back releases of Kirby Mass Attack and Kirby's Return To Dream Land.
What I'm saying is, the franchise spawned two different series with its first two installments, and I'm guessing the non-remake handheld installments are another. Sorry if it seems like I'm just posting a ramble, I just wanted to get this off my chest.
