Hey guys! I think its bizarre the whole occupy movement, its leaderless and doesnt seem to have a clear direction other then people are tired of the status quo and are getting together to cause change. Does anyone here have an occupy movement in their city? Occupy Edmonton has been camped out on a (ironically enough) private corporations park, the corporation melcor has said they will take no legal action against the group but has advised them to not camp overnight .

There's an occupy movement scheduled here in Springfield, Illinois sometime in the next couple weeks but it seems so fucking pointless. As soon as they tell me what exactly the reasoning behind all this is I might consider going, but right now it seems everyone is doing it for a couple hundred different reasons and there is no consensus. I know my roommate is going but I'm not convinced even he knows why he's doing it. I know they did one up in Chicago and a bunch of people got arrested which makes me even less likely to go to something like this. Before I risk being arrested I want to know why I'm there in the first place.

The one in San Antonio has been pretty peaceable. I understand and sympathize with some of their demands, but it's kind of hard to take them seriously when you have protestors saying things like "We need to, like, um, get rid of money," it's hard to take them seriously.

Yeah I have the same thoughts, I talked to a few of them and asked why they are protesting and they couldnt really tell me, they seemed pretty nervous about the whole thing and it left me wondering how effective they could possibly be, nobody is taking them seriously. That being said, I do believe the status quo is fucking us all up the ass and that corporate reform should happen

I'd love to see some kind of reform myself. I mean those banks should never have been allowed to do what they did and basically collapse the entire economy when it all backfired around them. I just don't think these people could even agree on something as simple as bank regulation reform. Some of them seem to want student loans done away with, others just hate corporations like Wal-Mart, and others just were like "I have no idea what this is about but fuck yeah!" If they want to be taken seriously they need to find a leader and a set of demands, otherwise they need to just go away.

agreed! They need clear direction and purpose like
Bank Reform
Remove corporations rights as a legal person
Bring back the gold standard
make it law for coporations to place the public interest before profit
dont get me wrong, I dont think earning profit is a bad thing and corporations do generate a great deal of wealth but I dont think they should be able to generate wealth at the expense of ethics and morals, we need to take care of this planet and each other to an extent.

Not to mention the ones that do hold mortgages or loans using incredibly shady collectors, such as ones that impersonate police officers and demand payments for dead relatives' debts. The legal shit they pulled off that wrecked the economy was greedy and reprehensible, but they're getting away with shady stuff that's downright horrifying.

I'm not camping out in a park, but I find the 99% ers reasons to do so pretty easy to discern.
GET MONEY OUT OF POLITICS
in other words, most politicians' only concern is for their own campain contributors and for thier next reelection. Screw the people who pay your salary!
example: out of the top ten money contributors to the republican party, 7 of them are oil companies. Gas and Oil Party (GOP). Who do you think they are looking out for?

The only way this is going to work is with violence. Tear down Wall Street. Occupy the rubble. They have the money to rebuild it anyway.
Also, there was an Occupy Norfolk last month, but it was miniscule and doesn't appear to have gone anywhere.

Yeah I agree trying to pin it all on one party is ridiculous, both of the major parties are getting paid off by corporations. I don't really know that getting the money out of politics will help, personally, because we'd still have career scumbags running for the most part. It sure would be nice though to have some politicians in D.C. that actually gave a damn about the average person rather than being there to line their own pockets.

I'm not even 100% sure what this "occupy X" thing is/was about, but it made for some funny images around the net, so... That's kinda like a victory right?

It seems at their base that the movements are meant to bring attention to the 1% of americans (and yes corporations) getting preferential treatment. College kids and wing nuts off the street can't change it by themselves but hopefully the attention the protests receive will promote dialog and eventual change by the people in power. This very thread brought up very interesting concepts just in the first few posts and on a larger scale it's doing the same.

Few thoughts, as a foreigner:
- Saying that "the protesters don't have a coherent list of causes they're fighting for" is of course true, but also in a way a trivial remark. Protesters have valid reasons to complain (social and economic injustice), and that's truly enough. It's up to the people in power to plan and act out the actual solution. A good mouthpiece and idol-like figure never hurts, though. People like to have somebody, who gives them chewed answers. Too bad the issues here are a bit too complex to be tackled that way, I think.
- I'm positively suprised by the longevity of the protest. Traditionally, it's been the europeans who protest passionately. (And sometimes burning cars & shit - I hope this doesn't come to that. US protesters have shown their sense, mostly.).
- Just one point on the economy: 147 interrelated companies, mostly banks, own 40% of the worlds wealth. ( source) This is insane on so many levels. Even right-wingers ought to be able to agree, that this is hardly ideal for economy.
- If you want to watch just one video containing left-wing propaganda from a protester, pick this one.

As much as my inner technocrat hates these people, I should start an occupy Findlay Illinois movement. I could camp outside the goat tower.

OCCUPY DENVER ELECTS LEADER
In response to Denver Mayor Michael Hancock’s insistence that Occupy Denver choose leadership to deal with City and State officials, and drawing inspiration from the notion that corporations are people, Occupy Denver’s General Assembly has elected a leader: Shelby, a three year old Border Collie. “Shelby is closer to a person than any corporation: She can bleed, she can breed, and she can show emotion. Either Shelby is a person, or corporations aren’t people,” said a Shelby supporter at the time of her election.
Occupy Denver reserves the right to alter leadership status, but for now, Shelby exhibits heart, warmth, and an appreciation for the group over personal ambition that Occupy Denver members feel are sorely lacking in the leaders some of them have voted for on national, state, and local levels. Accordingly, Occupy Denver looks forward to communication with Mayor Hancock and Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper sometime this week to introduce their leadership.
Newly-elected leader Shelby will be leading this Saturday’s Occupy Denver march against Corporate Personhood, and invites all other civic minded dogs (and their leash-holders) to join.

In terms of numbers, Occupy Chicago is pretty pathetic. If this was a strong national movement, they should have been able to get good representation at the country's third largest city. Big Boss Rahm has been pretty effective in reducing their impact to almost nothing, though.
