I am starting this thread to gauge public opinion on the use of music in RE games.
When I play REmake, I like to turn off the bgm. I don't like the 'action music' playing when dogs enter into a battle with you. I prefer the spookiness of only hearing the sounds of Chris or Jills' footsteps. I think horror movies are creepier in dead silence. However, I really do like hearing the save room theme played when entering that room. If only there was an option to disable music but have that play regardless.
I also do not like how Regenerators trigger the 'action music' even before you've seen them in your first encounter. It was cool though to have the music incorporate sounds of the enemies to cause paranoia.

When you are playing a horror game it does tend to make it a little obvious when a monster is about to jump you if the music is on. A lot of the games will suddenly break into "creepy" music right as something is about to happen and it can really break the immersion.

The Silent Hill games always have excellent audio. I'll go through a half hour of crazy noises and half-music, scared out of my mind, peeking around every corner, waiting for enemies to come out, and then I realize that I haven't seen an enemy for like 20 minutes. That's great sound design.
The dumbest thing I've seen in survival horror is music that turns off when all of the enemies nearby are dead. Alan Wake did this, and it was completely annoying, and really brought down a game that had a huge amount of potential.

RE 4 did that too but then again it wasn't a scary game unless the wolves were jumping out of bushes and shit.

I've always been a fan of RE3: Nemesis OST, especially when Nemesis pops up outta nowhere.

To be honest i have never found the Resident Evil series to be scary. It has a few cheap, BOO jump out scares but that's it.
Silent Hill on the other hand.... my mate lent me SH2 when i was 13 or 14 and i gave him it back after a few days. Way too frightening. The atmosphere in those games are crazy.

The sewer section with the Cazadors has some tense music, but yeah, I think the game is meant to have more of a thriller action movie vibe on your first playthrough, with all of the near-miss and back-against-the-wall action sequences.

never played much of the RE series. I did play some of the Silent hill series, and liked what the music added. I suggest Amnesia: the Dark Descent for a real scare in gaming and the music was a great part of that game. If you do try that game out, I suggest headphones turned up to 11 and all the lights out to get the full gaming experience out of it.

I think with Resident Evil, it really depends. I hate the music in the original Resident Evil, but the music in the Director's Cut Dualshock version is way, WAY better IMO. Sometimes music can add to the atmosphere, sometimes silence makes things creepier; it really just depends on the game and situation.
