I'm thinking of getting a new cell phone, but I'd like to know a few things first.
The phone I have now is a regular Samsung T-229. What I definitely want is some good texting capabilities like using a keypad instead of a dialpad to text and being able to transfer my text messages to my computer easily. I like to text my GF a lot, but I don't like that I often run out of SMS space and it's a hassle having to copy my messages to my laptop by hand, and it takes a while to send her even short messages.
I'm also debating on whether I should get internet with it. I would love to have a smartphone with 3G/4G and GPS that could also act as a modem to hook up my laptop to the internet. I don't think I need all that just yet, but it is something I'm thinking about for the future. Even if I get a non-smartphone cell, is it worth having internet on it anyway?
I'm also concerned about cost. My sister-in-law is curious about going with a family plan or just the both of us. Any phone-shopping tips you guys would like to share? Thanks in advance.

Wow, that fact alone is enough to help me decide; that's just awesome :3
My current carrier is Verizon, but I think I'm getting tired of them.

also, im sure you can just forward your text to your email. when you click on the text message, just hit forward, and enter an email instead of a phone #. thats another solution. i used to do that before i upgraded to a smart phone & before i found out about the sprint website

My phone can't forward messages to e-mail addresses. I tried. Even if I save my e-mail address to the phonebook, it won't let me select it as a forward address which is retarded... If I could actually forward them to e-mail, I probably wouldn't even be getting a new phone.

What is the point of saving text messages? How long do you plan on keeping them for? I am curious because I am the type of person who deletes anything I don't deem as necessary.

Wait until Ice Cream Sandwich really begins to roll out on Android phones and then pick up any phone that supports it. Just about every device that will work with the new OS will be a nicer, easier, better phone than what currently exists. I addition, any phone that upgrades to it will most likely be a nicer, easier, better phone.
If you go Android, you can easily integrate Google Voice. Swap your number or port over and use the integrated software.
I love Google Voice. It allows me to remain carrier independent and I can use any phone with any number as my own as long as I hook it up.

For the same reason people take photos: to keep them as memories.
I'm not sure I'm ready to upgrade to a smartphone yet, even though it seems to be the staple choice nowadays. How much more is it compared to a regular mobile phone?

you have to pay for a data plan. right now you just worry about text & minutes, but w/a smart phone you NEED a data plan.

In other words, $20-$30 per month more.
