So, is this a must buy for all the 3DS owners here? I know it is for me. So here is a dedicated place for discussing it instead of cramming all of our 3DS game talk into the 3DS thread.
Most people have seen the trailers, but to those who haven't:
The newest 3D trailers on the 3DS look amazing, even though the 3D is really the lowest selling point for me. When it switches to First Person Mode when flying through the air, my jaw dropped. Definitely can't wait for this.

I would buy the game if it were out on the Wii. No console version = no purchase for me. Certainly don't think that Nintendo cares, and when the WiiU comes out, there will be something for it... I'll hang back and watch in envy for a year or two.

I'll have to look into it. Mario Kart DS was one on the best entries in the series; Mario Kart Wii was one of the worst. If it's more like the DS one than the Wii one, I'll be all over it like a hobo on a ham sandwich.
See now I like Mario Kart Wii, I actually enjoy using the wheel attachment, though I am sure I may be in the minority on that, I am a huge fan of double dash as well

I'd honestly call Mario Kart DS the BEST entry in the series.

I've heard nothing but good things about Mario Kart DS yet unfortunately missed out on the game. Although I don't own a 3DS and likely won't buy one until I'm out of school, I'm going to keep an eye on this one; it looks pretty promising.

Kart Wii was all about staying with the pack until the end so that you don't get blue shelled four times in a row to come in last place after being ahead for two and a half laps. The game doesn't honor skill improvement with better placing, instead it uses cheap mechanics to auto adjust your rank back down. It becomes a fight against the system's logic rather than a race to see what your best time and engaged maneuvers are.
Double Dash was significantly toned down in regards to being cheap with game mechanics by comparison to Wii. I enjoyed it much more.

While I do hate the blue shell, I think I enjoyed Mario Kart Wii so much because my favorite aspect of Mario Kart since its inception has been battle mode, so some of the aspects like the blue shell during races don't bother me as much because as much as I enjoy coming in first, I more so love destroying those racers around me with whatever items or tactics I can much more

Mario Kart Wii had few of major issues:
1) Cheap AI, compounded by too many racers on the track. Prepare to get hit by lightning, blue shells, and invincible racers every ten seconds.
2) Classic tracks that weren't as cool or recreated as lovingly as the classic tracks in MKDS.
3) Severely nerfed offroading, which left light characters like Toad completely useless.
4) No challenge mode. It was a fantastic feature in MKDS, there was no excuse for not including one in MKW as well.
Josh, I would probably agree that MKDS is the flatout best as well, but I didn't want to get sidetracked on a MK64 vs. MKDS argument.
I was basically going to say what Mr. Lexia said in his first point.
The CPU is ridiculous, just as you are about to win, they teleport behind you pretty much or blue shell you to last place, all while bashing you off the course along the way.

i understand the complaints against MKW, but im w/king, the game was still fun to me. i hate the blue shells vs the CPU AI, but against friends, its hilarious. the online mode played very well and had no lag at all. especially since it allowed me to play w/friends in tucson and i was in phoenix. the only thing missing was voice chat, but thats not a huge deal since we all have cel phones.

snaking. it was notorious online, basically doing the mini turbo trick over & over & over on straightaways & basically anywhere. made playing online not fun cuz you would get pwned if you werent good at that.
otherwise, its a great game overall. both local multiplayer & single player.

Ah, ok.
Also, I'm happy Nintendo's actually numbering their shit for once.

Something that annoyed me a lot with MKW was that if you weren't in first place, it's really difficult to get items (due to how many CPU karts are in the same place), making it hard to catch up.
Also, Mario Kart 3DS/7 will be a first day buy for me. I really like the first-person view, and the flying.

Nintendo America has issued a press release for Mario Kart 7 which details the game’s online mode as well as the single player and SpotPass and StreetPass features. Here’s all the details they have kindly provided:
At the heart of Mario Kart is multiplayer racing. Using a broadband Internet connection or local wireless built into the Nintendo 3DS, players can race against their own friends or even against opponents worldwide. The new Community feature allows players to create groups with other Mario Kart fans while setting up specific rules to make customized racing environments. Easy setup allows players to quickly create a community and share with others via the StreetPass™ feature. Community leaderboards will also show the most up-to-date information from recent races. Solo players can race through the Grand Prix and Time Trial modes using either the Circle Pad layout or the motion-sensitive gyro controls of the system to steer their karts. The gyro controls also allow players to control their karts in a first-person perspective, a feature never before seen in the Mario Kart franchise.
Mario Kart 7 will also use StreetPass and SpotPass™ features built into the Nintendo 3DS system. Walking by other Mario Kart 7 players in real life with StreetPass enabled allows gamers to exchange racing scores, win/loss records, number of collected coins and other game data. With SpotPass enabled, players will be able to receive ghost data to race against. Up to seven ghosts can be downloaded at the same time, allowing for a full eight-player race. Additionally, a Mario Kart channel will be a central location for players to view information collected through StreetPass and SpotPass.
Every iteration of the Mario Kart series introduces new twists and turns, and this newest Mario Kart game is no different. New playable characters include Metal Mario from the Super Mario 64™ game and Lakitu, the spectacled cloud-riding Koopa. Players can also choose to race as their own Mii™ characters. New power-ups include the Fire Flower and Super Leaf. The Fire Flower allows players to throw blazing balls of fire at other drivers, while the Super Leaf makes the Tanooki Tail appear on the back of karts to knock other drivers and items out of the way. And, of course, the karts come equipped with gliders for maneuvering through the air and propellers for underwater propulsion.
The Mushroom Cup and Flower Cup introduce eight new courses, including ones on Wuhu Island and one created by Retro Studios set in the jungles from the Donkey Kong Country™ Returns game. The Shell Cup and Banana Cup feature eight classic courses, including Luigi’s Mansion from the Nintendo DS™ and Koopa Beach from the Nintendo 64™. There will be 16 new courses and 16 classic courses total.
sounds kind of cool. i hope they allow downloadable tracks. and it feels to me as though they are adding way too many characters. they should just focus on the tracks, but thats just me

Is that damn squid item removed?
I'm assuming that throwing balls of fire is the special item in Mario Kart: Double Dash. Not really sure about this franchise going into Diddy Kong Racing territory with air and water stuff. The Tanooki suit doesn't sound that exciting for racing maybe battling would be cool.
I hope they address the problem of heavy characters being impossible to win with in racing in Mario Kart DS.

I'm with username on feeling that they're adding too many new characters, just heard that they're adding Wiggler and Queen Bee (renamed Honey Bee) as playable characters, with more secret characters to be revealed...
How much more bottom of the barrel can we get, and who is it they think wants to play as all these random characters? MK Wii was already overcrowded with questionable racers...

It took them a decade but they finally ripped off Diddy Kong Racing.
Let's face facts: regardless of what I say about Mario Kart 7, it'll end up being one of the best-selling games on its platform, just like the past two installments. Though the presence of an actual challenge in Mario Kart DS didn't detract from its popularity, Mario Kart Wii marked a new movement for the series, and one that essentially turned Mario Kart into a party game. Not that there's anything wrong with party games, of course; it's just that Mario Kart Wii made any display of skill a losing prospect, as it perpetually sabotaged success in an attempt to level the playing field. Some would view this approach as a masterstroke on Nintendo's part, as it allows a group of people with differing skill sets to complete on equal ground without nasty things like "experience" getting in the way. As expected, Mario Kart 7 takes this same tack, and its regressive nature promises to annoy karting fans looking for the series to hop back on the highway to the danger zone.
