Gillian Anderson is stirring the pot about revisiting The X-Files again on a recently taped segment for the Australian morning show Sunrise. While doing an interview with host Kylie Speer about her role in the new sequel to the spy-spoof Johnny English, Anderson confirmed that a third X-Files is in the planning stages and will perhaps be on screens everywhere as early as next year. Speer later shared the revelation on her Twitter account, the interview itself will air sometime in the near future.
Surprising news? Yeah, a little. The first X-Files movie did an okay $84 million in business, and that was at the height of the show’s popularity. The sequel released in 2008 made just over $20 million at the box office, and this despite an over six year respite for the franchise after the series ended in 2002. While the teenage me that grew up watching The X-Files in the 90s would love to see another kick at the can, I was really underwhelmed by the 2008 sequel. Unless Chris Carter has a real once in a lifetime idea for an X-Files movie, maybe it’s time to leave well enough alone. Or reboot it. Ha!

I'm a huge X-Files mark and absolutely loved the first movie.
That said, the second movie gave me muscular dystrophy.
More importantly, that link talks about a Johnny Enlgish sequel. Haters gonna hate, but Mr. Bean can do no wrong.

I don't understand why people hate the second X-Files movie. It was good. It felt like a long episode of the show, and after six years of no X-Files, that's pretty much all I wanted.

The X-Files where huge, people are expecting much when they hear something about it. I still haven't seen the second movie, but my brother said it was decent.

It was boring, dude. The first one was fast paced and FELT like it was on a bigger scale. The second one felt like one of the episodes you always skip on the DVD because it makes you tired.

The first one was NOT fast-paced. Fast-paced and X-Files are antonyms. It did have more explosions though. And they fought Wu Tang killer bees.

The second one did have Billy Connolly though, so that gives it some points.

I think it is pointless making a movie of a show that ran for so long and had so many episodes that ran for almost an hour when the movie will only be about double or maybe triple the length of an episode.
That said, in my opinion, both of the movies so far have been terrible. They really should have tried to do something bigger with the series for the movies.

The first movie was a canon movie. It was more about expanding and explaining the vague alien mythology that had taken over the show in four and fifth seasons than it was about telling a decent story. It did tell a decent story if you were an avid watcher, but a good big screen adaptation is accessible to series newcomers, and Fight The Future was not.
I am pretty sure Chris Carter has said that any future movies will, like the second movie, follow the Monster of the Week format of the most popular episodes.

I love the first movie. It felt just like watching the series. The dialogues weren't bad either.
If you ask me, there should be a X-Files movie every year, like they did with Star Trek. The series would deserve that and the Fans too.
