That's totally not what this is about. This is about this:

Quote:
But if I point out the truth (a man is a man because he has balls that carry semen that can impregnate a women, and a woman is a woman who can become pregnant by said impregnation due to her carrying ova) and remind people that they are what they are, not what they would like to think the are, how is that hurtful? What is wrong with the truth?

What's wrong with that is twofold:
A) That's not the truth - and this is a complex issue that I'll explain later in this post
B) That's basically like walking up to a transsexual person and saying, "Hey, you've undergone several years of painful therapy and hormone courses and had a painful surgery that requires six to twelve months of rehabilitation, congratulations. But you're still a man." You can't be much more of a dick.

Now, the issue here is that you seem to think that transsexualism requires a "sex change" procedure - something that doesn't exist, by the way - but in reality it's a long process involving taking hormones for a very long time, counseling, cosmetical procedures and finally vaginoplasty / phalloplasty. This usually takes from one year to several, and many TS people don't go for the final procedure for various reasons. So yeah, it's totally not like on TV.

Basically Blackout's post amounts to this: no matter what a person goes through, no matter what actual sexuologists / psychiatrists / people that actually studied gender issues say, they're still going to be a man / woman to him; and that's offensive.

EDIT: Actually, what's more offensive is that Blackout seems to suggest that this stems from his fear of accidentally having sex with a transwoman. Wow, way to be sexist. I thought this was 2011, not 1981.

You know, this was a nice friendly discussion until you came along and made it all angry and personal.

People have a right to their opinions, no matter how "offensive" you find it, and just because you have a personal stake in the argument doesn't make him wrong, or you right.

He feels differently from you, but I'm sure he respects your right to believe what you want and live your life the way you see fit. You should do the same.

I do not think there is anything wrong with "calling things as I see them." Just because something is defined one way does not mean that it is set in stone. There are many words which once meant something far different and there are also many places around the world where it is acceptable to say something one way where it would not be somewhere else. I mean, how are people supposed to call things? As other people see them? Just because you have an idea of what may be politically correct does not mean you have a right to force it on anyone else. People are entitled to their own opinions and beliefs, and if they choose to adopt the opinions and beliefs of others, it is their choice.

Being offended by words is ridiculous to me, and it is on the path towards oppressive behavior. First, you are offended by something someone says or writes. After that, you argue with them. Then, you burn their books or try to get rid of them when you cannot get them to submit to you. Finally, you go after other like minded people. And now you are basically a Nazi. And that's me "calling things as I see them."

Here are three quotes I will share with you all, as I see they may be relevant to this discussion:

People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use. ~Soren Kierkegaard

Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so, too. ~Voltaire

Nature knows no indecencies; man invents them. ~Mark Twain

Although I do think Blackout is about 90% wrong in his opinions in this thread (as they seem to be purely based on what's he's experienced, his religious leanings, and not on actual psychology or science), he at least is not purposely trying to attack people. He may not understand the difference between gender and sex, but that's no reason to attack him personally.

Nekkoru, I agree with a lot of what you're saying, but when you take the route of just getting angry and attacking you lose credibility. I know it's a personal subject for you, but I'd suggest taking a break from this discussion for a bit. Just know that, no, not everyone on this board feels the same way as some of these guys. We don't find it disgusting and we don't get freaked out at the notion of a child attempting happiness by projecting their true gender. Granted, there are still quite a few people who have an issue, but that's a reflection of the United States--where most forumers are from--as a whole.

Because it's a fact of life that intolerant people only exist in the United States. Rolling Eyes

And before this gets out of hand, I agree with the rest of the statement; it's just that that last line kinda threw me off.

Black face is always funny. Like the time we were sliding down the coal hills, Denny flipped over and got his whole face covered in soot. Good times.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

Don't read into what I'm saying too much; just read what I actually wrote. The fact is the majority of forumers are Americans, and when it comes to Western society the United States tends to be behind other countries when it comes to accepting sexual orientation. Because of those facts, I'm not surprised that we got a lot of WHAT!? and Shocked responses from guys on here from a simple story of a kid wanting to dress up like a gender that doesn't "match" her genitalia. She's not having a sex change, she's not having any surgery...she's dressing like a girl.

If you thought I meant that only the US has intolerant people, you sure think I'm a lot stupider than I am. I'm almost insulted. Cool

Photobucket

This little kid will have to find out for himself whether he wants to really be a girl or not, or if this is just a phase he's going through. If he discovers later that he prefers being a boy after all, then that's his problem.

I said this in the chat a few minutes ago, and it deserves to be said again; "A burnt hand learns best not to play with flame."

To explain the picture above and (hopefully) put this in a different light for everyone... this is actually a miniscule problem (if you can even label it as a problem, which I don't). If this kid had the urge to kill his parents every day, then it'd be a different story. Harm to ones self is a non-issue for me, as it is then the responsibility of the individual doing him/herself harm to rectify the problem, as opposed to if an individual is harming others, in which case it becomes a much larger, significant problem. And if the individual can't bring themselves to stop damaging themselves, then... -shrugs-

Like I've said before in this thread, I'm happy the parents are supporting the kid regardless of if it is a phase or not. I still feel it is completely irresponsible of the parents to go running to the media to basically pat themselves on the back without ever once stopping to think, "Hey might this hurt my child in the long run?" The kid isn't old enough to fully appreciate how this decision is going to affect his life, and the terribly tough road he will have if he truly does want this, and now his parents are out parading him in front of the media. The kids at school probably already pick on him for being different, this is just going to add fuel to the fire if any of them ever find the article.

I don't know, go back a page or so and read my post... now that is some nonsense.

I wasn't trying to start a fight or tell people that their beliefs are wrong or anything like that, and I thought the Tucker Max story was relevant (albeit probably pretty offensive in it's wording / attitude), because I personally do think that someone should have the right to know about that kind of thing if the relationship gets physical.

That being said I did not intend to personally offend you or insult what you have been through and would like to apologize if it was taken that way.

Now, I am curious about something, do you consider it OK to not inform the other person in a relationship about being transgender? Not you as in your relationships specifically, that's none of my business at all, I mean just more as a general opinion, how do you feel about it as a concept? Is it a none of their business because it is the past kind of a thing? Or is it a one should be forthcoming because lasting relationships are built on honesty kind of thing? Is the community divided on the concept?

Actually to avoid making it personal I'd like to reword that. Instead of how you feel about the question let me ask this, basically what I wonder is: Does the transgender community consider keeping the past to themselves as far as romantic relationships are concerned, it's no one's business in any other situation I think as OK or is it taboo? I honestly have no idea, and would like to know.

Also the whole thing about how it's a fear that all hetero males have was me being a smart ass so I'll apologize for that. I'll admit the stated scenario is something the vast majority of us (and if I'm an arrogant assuming bastard who shouldn't presume to speak for everyone else), then it's a scenario that I personally would want to avoid, but I don't really think we (or I) sit huddling in a cave in fear of the possibility, despite Tucker's freakout at the end of the story.

It's just that the conversation reminded me of that story and made me think of the above question about being forthcoming with the information, so I thought I'd post it to go along with my question.

Also if I or this is upsetting or offending you I totally apologize and will just drop it.

I like the way you think, Usa. I will keep that in mind.

To the topic i can only say that i don't care enough to have a opinion. That kid should decide what ever it wants. There is no right or wrong answer i would have in mind.

I live in Australia, so I was somewhat offended by that. By the way, the last time someone did something involving blackface on TV (last year?), a shitstorm both national and international started.

------------

Back to the topic of this thread, I personally couldn't care less. If he (I'm assuming he/she hasn't already changed gender yet) decides to go through with this, it doesn't effect me in any way/shape/form, so I don't care. I don't really have an opinion on TG issues.

I'm offended by all the people being offended in this thread.

Seriously though, I have the same opinion as most of you: Good thing this is just dress up, because 10 years old is too young to fully consider the long term repercussions of a decision this big.

My understanding was that the international community was offended, but the national community was not. Obviously since you live actually there, you would know better than I. I apologize.
