In the Sherlock Holmes episodes, they'd wander through London.

Oh yeah. There were tons of episodes where they seemingly move around or ran for *miles* without hitting anything. And the room is not all that big. Like, at all.

They probably never really thought it out that hard, they needed a perfect excuse for wacky alternate timeline adventures without all the headaches and arguments that alternate timelines come with so BLAMMO holodeck.

I think Star Trek: TNG was more about the "what" than the "how".

I mean, the message at the core of the show was that everyone should attempt to live in peace. That's why Roddenberry made a point of having an interracial crew on the Enterprise in the original show. Things like replicators, transporters, universal translators, and holodecks weren't necessarily based on any real world scientific concepts but were more of a gentle encouragement. It was like, hey, if everybody on this planet stops trying to blow each other up, look at the type of cool shit scientists might be able to come up with instead.

I think with the holodeck, the projections would adjust themselves as you move, and you would likely be wandering around in a small circular path, without ever noticing that everything around you is moving to keep you on that path. If they could create image projection powerful enough to fool your eyes/brain, I am sure they could have it move slightly without you noticing.

I did see something somewhere about how people' sense of direction is totally shot when blindfolded and they will walk in circles and never realize it, so this seems like a valid theory as any.

What about running? Also, what about stairs? Or what if you want to climb Mount Everest? Everything in the Holodeck seems to be tactile, to the point where Picard was able to kill Borg with a tommy gun.

On a related note, I'm going to start watching Star Trek.

Maybe the future of gaming will just be about Patrick Stewart shooting things with a Tommy Gun.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.
