I'm posting this in the general forum for now, because I want a lot of people to see it.

I don't know if it's because I'm getting older or whatnot, but I'm getting this general feeling of dread and boredom when it comes to music. Listening to it doesn't make me happy anymore, I've got that dread feeling that it either sucks or I've listened to it before, and well, I feel musically lost. Nothing feels inspiring, and I've hit a snag on what I should listen to.

So here's the deal-- I need recommendations. The band, the genre, the age of it, even if you THINK I may have listened to it before, it doesn't matter. In fact, it's almost like I'm giving you carte blanche to gush about any and all bands you may like and want everyone else to listen to. I open it up to anything, even stuff you think I may have heard, simply because there may be an awesome song by a well known band I may have somehow missed.

Open up about it. You can give me long ass lists, it doesn't matter. You can give me guilty pleasure songs even. I hate to say it, but it's depressing to feel this way about music, and I'm open to any and all suggestions to rekindle it, or at the very least have fun listening to something again.

Lay it on me.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas.

Will you listen to foreign groups? This one has one of the verses entirely in English and subs as well. Just try it.

I knew that was going to come up, which is why I made sure to add "I posted it here so more people would see it" to my original post. I don't feel that forum gets as many visits as this one. What I'm looking for is sheer number of responses. Ideally, I'd want to get enough to fill up a few CDs.

It happens with everyone. My father instilled in me my love of music, and he's going through a withdrawal that I see a lot of baby boomers going through after listening to the same stuff for 50 years. I mostly listen to punk, with a mix of folk and hip-hop, but I keep my options open. Here are a few artists followed by albums with select tracks that I think are some of the more accessible stuff in my collection:

Rocket from the Crypt, Scream, Dracula Scream!

Bouncing Souls, How I Spent My Summer Vacation

Atmosphere- Sad Clown Bad Summer

Bomb the Music Industry!, Get Warmer

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

Are you telling me you no longer enjoy hearing Sweet Home Alabama or Back In Black or Run To The Hills or any of the myriad of classics out there to enjoy?

Music is subjective, what is gold to me may be trash to you, but before I recommend a list of stuff to check out I'd like to ask you what your current mentality is, do you feel happy and optimistic, or angry and disillusioned, do you feel sad or numb, are you blah, are you content, are you constipated?

There's tons of good stuff out there to take a stab at but knowing how you are feeling would help me narrow down what I would suggest. If you're feeling bored with music maybe it's time to explore a genre you don't have a lot of exposure to or maybe disliked in the past.

This is actually pretty good advice, I kind of went through this is the last couple years where I was super bored with what I was listening to and it just doesn't do much for me anymore. I used to really not like rap or country in High School and the few years afterwards. I started listening to some of it in the last 2-3 years, starting mostly with mainstream stuff and found there was really some of it I dug.

Music tastes change I think as you get older too, what you found to be enjoyable at 14, like say a song that says fuck half a million times, may not be something you enjoy as you get in your mid to late 20's, but you may find that you are really starting to get into something you used to think was stupid and boring. So maybe start there, find stuff you used to think was crap and just go listen to it, you may find you suddenly like it.

I used to hate a lot of the music my Dad listened to like Petty, Seger, Clapton, etc., but now I listen to it a lot, and don't really listen to much of the Metallica, RAtM, Pantera that I used to listen to anymore.

I'll just go ahead and recommend one of my favorite albums.

The first is Steely Dan's 1972 Can't Buy A Thrill. I have no clue if you've ever listened to the group, but you're in for some very talented jazz rock. The lyrics in particular are quite excellent - mysterious and at times cynical - but if you're one of those dudes that never listen to a song's vocals, you will seriously miss out.

Start here. I also highly recommend Reelin in the Years, Brooklyn Owes the Charmer Under Me as well as Turn That Heartbeat Over Again if you are too lazy to look up the remaining tracks.

If you were looking for a specific genre, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Agreed. I used to only like mainstream rock when I was in high school, but nowadays my tastes have expanded quite dramatically.

I remember seeing an absolutely retarded Death Metal album somewhere that was basically called Aliens probing your daughter with frozen feces or maybe the last word was poopcicles, but for the life of me I cannot find a picture of it on the internet now and be a bastard and post it here as a suggestion.

Excellent. Good suggestions, all.

As for my mindset, I'm an overall happy, optimistic kinda person. I'm not in any kind of bad mood. The thing is, I own something to the tune of over 500 CDs and I've been buying them since I was 12. I'm now 30. I'd been listening to various things in my stash for just about 18 years now, and I rotate out what I keep in my car until recently. Recently I felt that I've listened to every CD I own quite a few times, and what used to elicit a reaction out of me now just plays as background music. Then I get cognizant(sp?) of what I'm listening to, think about it, and switch it out. Since I'm tired of all the CDs I own (I am the type to buy a CD to give the band a chance if I like one song), I'd tried listening to some of the albums all the way through, and frankly, one song does not always a good CD make. After finding out I pretty much spent $15 on one song and a bunch of shit filler, I started making my own CDs, making sure to put only songs I like on them. This lasted awhile, then started landing me in the same funk.

So I started listening to the radio. Big mistake. Rock, rap, anything that makes it to the radio just frankly sucks I think. Locally, we have about fifty "in the club" radio stations, two modern rock stations that think playing Nickelback and POD makes them awesome, and exactly one classic rock station that constantly gets preempted by sporting events. Radio took a record two days to make me sick.

I am a musician, and I learn how to play songs by ear, so I'd give shitty songs a chance as well, just for the sake of listening to it, learning it in five minutes and saying "Cool, I know how to play another song." This well has also dried up, as it's like, well, what good is it to me to know how to play shitty songs?

To make a long story short, I guess you could say I'm in the frustrated musician mindset, if that makes any sense. I laughed when someone recommended Bouncing Souls though, as when I was playing in a band, three of the five members were huge Bouncing Souls fans, so our setlist included three Bouncing Souls covers.

Well, people are bombarding you with artists and songs, which is awesome, so I don't see the point in doing that myself. I do have a suggestion that I hope you take seriously.

I don't listen to terrestrial radio anymore. I would suggest getting SiriusXM Satellite Radio. There are dozens and dozens of commercial-free radio stations on there catering to just about every genre and time period. I've discovered a lot of music this way. Years ago, I found myself saying the same thing--"Music sucks now." I've changed my tune--"Most music on (regular) radio sucks now".

You can get it for like $13 a month--the cost of one CD. There are several different receivers you can get. The one I have is a portable model that automatically records my favorite stations even if I'm not listening. This way, I can go back and I have three hour blocks of music on about ten different stations. The recordings even lists the artist and title of every song recorded. If I don't like a song, I can skip it and start at the beginning of the next one with the push of one button.

If you're going to go with satellite radio, choose the Sirius package rather than the XM. You get two 24-hour Howard Stern stations included. Woo.

If you do seriously consider getting it, feel free to ask me any questions about it. There's a lot more to the service than just music.
