King, I have heard this several times and I have always said that once it happens to me, everyone I know can tell me "I told you so" (though really only my mother has told me the extra weight will fuck shit up).
However, I have had my current car since January 2003 and have yet to have a problem with the ignition or anything in that regard. My keychain actually used to be heavier as I had a lot more shit on it. A few years ago I cleaned it out and brought it down to where it is now.
I'm not saying it can't cause problems. I'm just saying taking over 8 years to do so is a little... well, less of a concern for me, I suppose.

Aika, is your ignition in your dash or steering column, and, I would venture to say there may be electronic or electrical things, switches, relays, sensors, that especially if in the column, may already be or are being damaged, that while it hasn't reared it's ugly head fully or at all, will be a shitstorm of a cluster fuck when it does
P.S. My brother and or cousin that work on my vehicles, would quite literally beat my ass if I had a heavy key chain hanging from my ignition, even though with my current vehicle, 2004 impala, it is in the dash and subsequently would cause less, as in lower amount of but no less pain in the ass, problems, in fact since my neice, his daughter started driving, she got a bunch of that crap, and he ripped it off of her key chain, and threw it in one of the garage garbage cans, on top, not destroyed, advised her it was there, and then showed her on the vehicle she drives, which is one of his many, all of the components it would fuck up
P.P.S. I forgot we had to replace my late grandmother's entire steering column in one of her volkswagens due to too much shit on a key chain, and I think that was all keys, cracked the damn column

lol well King I shall add you to the list of people who will tell me "I told you so" when my car finally does have problems in, what, 12 years? lol The ignition and engine have been checked regularly since I got the car, because the stupid check engine light has been stuck consistently on from day 1. Everything is working perfectly. They don't even charge us to look at my car anymore since we do take our cars in for so much work (my problems are with the cooling system).
Seriously the keychain is not that heavy. Most of the things on it are hollow or lightweight. I would venture to admit that the 2003 and the Leo keychains are a touch on the heavy side, and I've been pondering taking one of them off. I'm trying to decide which one, as they're both pretty meaningful to me.
Edit: hmm hmm I ditched the 2003. High school was a long time ago after all. Took off the pirate heart as well and added a little hollow puppy thing instead.

Isn't this entire argument rather dumb? I mean worrying about something as small as the ignition getting damaged over the course of a decade, is like worrying about the car rusting over time. Unless you put Saran Wrap over the entire vehicle, shit's gonna happen so why worry at all.
And really, isn't there a moderator that should keep threads focused on the topic, rather than derailing it within two posts? Honestly guys...

I didn't mean for this to become a "let's attack aika thread." I started it with a dumb jab about the gaudiness of her keyring and was just ribbing her for that.
Sorry about my involvement in turning this into a lecture series, aika.

The PROBLEM, with stuff dangling from the ignition, is not the getting caught, but bending not only the key, but the internal mechanism of the ignition within the dash or steering column, as well as the added weight, depending where located, while bending said mechanism, also containing the potential for not only cosmetic damage to the steering column or dash, but also if there are any sensors or wiring in an said area internally, where the force pulling down on the ignition is causing it to rub or weigh on something
This DID in fact happen in my 1989 Cutlas Supreme, the woman that owned it before me had excessive weight, which by the way was not as much as you think, hanging from the ignition, that not too long after owning the vehicle I had to replace the ignition, the switch in the steering column, a switch related to the horn in the steering column, a relay in the steering column related to the windshield wipers, and a cosmetic casing around the wiper / headlight / turn signal arm coming out of the steering column.
I know this to be true because my cousin is an ASE certified mechanic, and has his bachelors in Automotive Technologies with a minor in Electronics, and fixed it in my brother's garage, thus he showed me how the excess weight moved the rear of the cylinder higher, as well as making it loose within the column, moving it around causing damage.
THIS, THIS is a problem. |
This was exactly what I was talking about in my first post, and the reason I never hang much off car keys other than the key fob thing. I can't imagine that getting the car re-keyed is cheap and as such it is better to just be careful and not do it.

I rented a car that had a push to start ignition. You had to have the "key" nearby, but you could open your car door and everything without pushing any buttons. It was pretty neat.

Yeah a friend of mine has a Toyota that you just toss the keys in the cupholder and start the car by pushing the button. I guess it senses the keys nearby or something. What happens if your battery in the little key thing dies and you are in the middle of nowhere though? Is there some other way to start the car?

im sure they have a battery life indicator so you know when its ready to die. and im sure there are workarounds in case that were to happen.

My Grandpa's new car starts with a button push, but for security reasons he cannot unlock the steering wheel or the transmission from park without the key in the ignition, seems like a sensible security feature and the best of both worlds.

My ex had so much shit on her keychain that it actually turned the keys while she was driving a couple times. Not fun.
As my my keychain, I just recently took all the extraneous shit off. It currently has:
1. My house key
2. My car key
3. Two keys for the store where I work
4. My car door lock/alarm dealy
5. Mobile Speedpass
Two weeks ago it also would've had:
6. A key to my car that broke 3 years ago
7. A key to the car I crashed 11 years ago
8. A key to my old apartment
9. A key to the mailbox at my apartment
10. A key. I don't even know what this one was for.

I don't even know what half of the keys on this thing do. Notable exception: the little handcuff key on the lower right... I don't know how it got there.
