From allthingsd.com

We all know we are a society addicted to our cellphones.

But a recent study from TeleNav indicates just how far we would go rather than part with our beloved wireless technology.

The study found that:

* A third of all surveyed were willing to give up sex for a week rather than forego their mobile phone. (A full 70 percent of those willing to give up their phones were women.)

* When it comes to guilty pleasures, 55 percent were willing to go without caffeine, 63 percent said they’d give up chocolate before their phone, and 70 percent would forsake alcohol to hang on to their phone.

* Some 54 percent were willing to go a week without exercise to keep a tight grip on their phone. (I wonder how many people were already going a week without exercise — I’m surprised that number isn’t higher than 54 percent.)

Perhaps there are limits as to how far people would go: Only one in five was willing to go shoeless rather than phoneless. But of those, 43 percent of iPhone owners were willing to go barefoot, as compared with 27 percent of Android users and a quarter of BlackBerry owners.

Some 22 percent of smartphone owners said they would rather go a week without seeing their significant other than without checking their apps. (That’s probably the same number of people found sleeping on the couch after taking said survey.)

Only 14 percent of feature phone owners felt similarly. I have to say, if you are more willing to go without seeing your loved one than give up your nonsmartphone, you might want to rethink both your relationship and your choice of technology.

So what about you guys? Is there anything you value more than your cel phone?

My phone means very little to me. I hardly use it, so I would probably not give much up for a week to keep it.

Yeah, I don't think we'll get too many people in here to admit that they live on their cell phone.

I like my cell phone but if I had to give it up for a week, or even longer, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. I sure as shit wouldn't give up sex, my shoes, or brushing my teeth (!). I feel sorry for some people.

I wonder what these figures would look like in a Japanese sample.

I've lived without a phone before and honestly it wasn't bad at all. Only annoying thing was when you needed to ask someone something you had to go find them. If I had to choose between my phone and my computer I'd hand you my phone without a second thought. Shoes? Same thing. Chocolate? I'll keep the phone, thanks, but if it was food I actually liked I'd choose that over the phone.

Yeah, throwing chocolate in there seems kind of dumb to me because I could live without any specific food for a week easily. I think it's interesting when they compare one week of cell phone versus one week of something that's closer to an actual necessity--like brushing your teeth or taking showers. I can't think of anything that fits that criteria that I would give up over my phone.

Yeah I'm pretty sure this survey was designed for/by women because of the chocolate thing.

Oh don't be so sure. Thanks for reminding me about that pencil-in-the-front-pocket-while-playing-basketball incident of '05.

I lived twenty-two years before I got a cell phone; a week is nothing.

Hell, even now, since I've had a cell phone I sometimes go a week, or more, without even using it. Confused

My brother got one of those. Rolling Eyes I forget what the brand was, but it was one of the bright colored translucent kind they sold in mall kiosks. What a worthless invention. Laughing

Well, I almost always live on my... *sigh* non-smartphone. Regardless, since it has internet access (which is all I use it for), I would give up quite a few things to not be without it.

I can totally understand giving up guilty pleasures such as chocolate, alcohol, or caffein to keep a phone since they are usually considered negative things to consume anyways.

What I can't understand is that about 20% of people would give up brushing their teeth and wearing shoes for a week to keep their cell phones?

I'm sorry, but give up shoes? How the fuck will you go to work? Oh... you have a smart phone but don't work? Sounds like you live beyond your means and are the exact problem that causes our debt crisis.

As for brushing the teeth, just fucking gross.

Lastly, I wouldn't trade a week with my wife for a fucking phone. Thats just stupid. Maybe that is an easy way to determine if people should get married. If you would rather spend a week with a phone rather than your significant other, you shouldn't get married. If you would rather the company of someone who loves you, treats you with respect, honesty, and dignity, you would never choose a fucking electronics device.

And yet the NES almost won that poll. Confused

I use my phone a lot but between it and daily necessary routines (showering, brushing teeth) hell yeah I'd give it up. Between my computer and my phone... hm. My phone can do a lot of the things my computer can so that'd be a tough call. I could easily go without any certain type of a food for a week tho, that's not a big deal. No shoes? Uh, if I didn't have to go anywhere for a week, sure, why not. I'd never skip out on intimacy time with my significant other in exchange for my phone, though. That's just sad.

I'm not sure how long I've had a cell but it's been a while now. I think I got it my first year of college. Before then I had one of those pagers back in high school, lol. My mom got it for me but then immediately hated it because more often than not I'd forget to check it and miss her messages anyway.

Out of curiosity, what can your phone do that your computer cannot?

No idea? I didn't say it could. I said it does a lot of things my computer does, so it's not like I'd be unable to browse the net, check facebook, read my emails, and so on if I gave up my computer for my phone.

I'll admit it's really hard for me to go without my cell phone. I'm on it constantly. I left it at home by accident once when I went to work and barely made it to my lunch break to go pick it up.

If you had not had the phone for the rest of the day, would you have missed anything that would have altered your life? Or do you find that you need the entertainment to not be bored?
