And that's why you didn't know that the 3DS can be charged without the dock. |

This is exactly why I still use dial-up. |
I LOL'd.
But to be fair, the quality gap between IE and Firefox is a lot smaller than the quality gap between dial-up and cable/fiber optic.

AOL, if the client even still exists, uses IE. It used to use Netscape, but no one liked Netscape. Which is funny, because Firefox is built on the Netscape legacy.

That was probably because Netscape Communicator took even longer to load than Internet Explorer 5.

No-one liked Netscape because IE was (illegally) bundled with Windows, so people just used IE, eliminating any competition.

Um, no. Netscape kinda sucked.

I would still use it over Internet Explorer if I was given the choice between the two. How exactly did it 'suck'?

Does that include MobileSafari? (the one on the iPod, iPad and iPhone) It better not, because I use it. (Not that I have a choice when it comes to those devices)
EDIT: I think you wouldn't call the IQ of Safari users 'dismal'. On the study, Safari users are more smart than even Firefox and Chrome. |
I have a theory about why Safari and Camino generates such high IQ averages.
The products are expensive consumer products with an extremely high focus on the educational market. In the real world Macs vs PCs are purchased by consumers in a ratio of 9:1, while on college campuses Macs are owned by about 50% of the student population.
That explains why the default Mac browser may be ranked so highly. As far as Camino goes though, it appears that any time a person must make a choice about a browser, rather than accepting the default, the IQ average is higher. If we have already established that the Macs are primarily owned by a higher IQ crowd, then their owners already start ahead of the curve. The ones who choose an alternative browser fall into the next higher average .
This is just me guessing based on the results and knowing about the average demographic of users at colleges vs computer choice. |
For the record, I didn't actually read the study. I just don't like Macs.

I believe you mean a ratio of 1:9.
Also, my sister has been considering getting a Mac for college, but I think I talked her out of it by showing her the Free XBox deal.

I absolutely meant 1:9, thanks for catching that.
Also, I think that Macs are more appealing for students for a variety of reasons, but in the long run, understanding Windows will be more valuable to anyone who wants a job in the future. Most businesses use Windows. Of course as I say that, I know that there are droves of people who will argue all about the Mac and how it is great for video/pictures/music. Windows 7 can do all the same shit, more businesses use it in general, and ultimately you get a free XBox. In 2011, I'd still recommend a PC over a Mac unless you are told specifically by a place you work or school you go to that you need a Mac.

If I recall correctly, that is certain software that is used in curriculums for some classes such as sound recording and music composition that is only available on Macs.

There is definitely specific software that will only work on the Mac.
If you know you need it, you should get a Mac. The common misunderstand is that equivalent software does not exist for the PC. That is simply not true. As far as I am aware, there are no types of software that exist in the professional world where an equal PC counterpart is not used for production means.
Also, many licenses for software might be Mac only purchases, but they do offer a PC product as well. For example, where I work we offer Finale and Sibelius on Macs for the students. Both of these products are also available on Windows, but instruction will be given on Macs.

Not surprising. There was the presidential IQ hoax circa 2005, too.

Just because someone made it up doesn't make it not true, it just means there was no study to prove it.
Also, I was man enough to post the fact that it was a hoax after clearly buying into it.

No word if the research that discusses the IQ-level of posters in GPFontaine's threads is a hoax. Stay tuned.

I have something ironic to add to how my college operates.
IE is the default browser, can't print stuff properly without using it, BUT as of last year all computers that I knew of(EXCEPT in the Library) got replaced by Macs. Where would someone go to print something? The Library. If it's a class, you're on a Mac, likely using Opera(I found Firefox and added it to the Bar).
Maybe they'll have this figured out in 3 weeks when I go back for the Fall.

WTF are they doing for printing?
I know our printing works fine on the Mac or PC through any browser. We must install the Driver preemptively on the Mac though.

I don't know, it seems to rely on how they're using their website.
It's an frame heavy site. I've printed through Firefox numerous times without success(printing only a single frame I wasn't aiming for), but simply followed the directions on IE and it's always come out right.
If their website got upgraded and overhauled IE could be dropped. They probably don't want to pay a new designer though. Most colleges use the software WCU uses(wcu.edu) so I don't think it will be a major change anytime soon.

They use Blackboard, which should work fine with FF.
