This is a story close to home for me, i saw it and just started laughing:

Judge Barney McElholm bemoans influence of Ninja Turtles
A drunken Londonderry man arrested last month while staggering along Rosemount Avenue holding a circular saw later put a police officer in a headlock.
Eamonn Coll, 22, from Inishowen Gardens, pleaded guilty at Londonderry Magistrates' Court to possessing the circular saw and assault.
He committed the offences on 14 July. Sentencing was adjourned.
District Judge Barney McElholm said too many young men were fascinated by martial arts "and by Ninja Turtles".
Coll also admitted possessing herbal cannabis, when three bags of the drug were found on him after his arrest. |

Back in '86-87, a year prior to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles becoming popular on TV, I was learning Karate in my school gym. As most kids do, I lost interest and moved on to other things. In 2002-2003 as a young adult with zero interest in TMNT I studied Kun Tao. For the last year plus I have been studying Jujutsu and Chinese Kempo and still have virtually no interest in mimicking the Ninja Turtles.
In fact, the more I learn martial arts, the less desire I have to ever need to use it in a real scenario. I find myself calmer and happier when I am training. When I am lethargic or working too much I find my mood pushes further towards anger and hostility.
I think this judge is wrong, the real criminal is a lack of recess in schools and too many work hours in the standard week.
Also, I have only head locked two police officers in my life, and neither time was I under the influence of TMNT.

I'll admit that TMNT inspired me to construct a pair of nunchuks out of a couple pieces of scrap wood and a shoelace. Under duress the shoelace failed, and may or may not have struck a bystander in the eye.

Objection! He put the cop in a headlock! A headlock is not a ninja move. Clearly, the youth of today are over-influenced by the WWE, not Ninja Turtles!

A ninja might use a rear naked choke in the rare case that they required information from their adversary and preferred not to kill them on the spot. I'd argue that is a headlock.

A headlock is more of a wrestling move. And I would think that if a ninja wanted to detain someone, he'd do it chemically or knock them out with a strike. A RNC will knock someone out for a few seconds, but they'll wake up fairly quickly.

You mean like this?
I'd argue that is a choke hold. Not a headlock. A headlock goes around the head, not the neck.

No, not like that, that is a rear choke.
A rear naked choke:
Ice does have a point, a ninja would probably use a chemical to sedate, however I'm still going to say that a rear naked choke is very much a martial arts move that I would expect a ninja to know.
Oh, and the wrestling type would call a rear naked choke a "sleeper hold".

...you know, I could repeat that it is not a "headlock" but a "choke hold", but even more frustration lies down that path.

A ninja was an assassin. He didn't use choke holds or sedate any one. He would just kill or use blinding weapons to make a fast getaway. Wait, what the hell are we talking about? This is stupid.

Yeah, but it's possible he could need to interrogate someone on the spot to find out where his target is located. But as mentioned above, I think he'd be more likely to do it with a poisoned dart or something along those lines.

What headlock is not a chokehold then? Any time the person's neck is between another person's forearm and bicep, wouldn't that be a headlock?

You just removed the TMNT as being able to have the title of Ninja even though it is in their title.

No. A headlock is when you lock your arm around another person's head. Not their neck.

You know, I just remembered something. Over in Europe, they're not the Ninja Turtles. They're the Hero Turtles.

That is just flat out not true. If your arm is around the person's head, you are doing it wrong.

Really? Is that the full title or are they "Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles". Either way, it is kinda sad that they aren't ninjas...

They were Hero turtles very briefly. I definitely remember the show getting aired as "Ninja Turtles" as well.

Unless the person has piss-poor balance, you'll rarely be able to throw someone to the ground just by grabbing around his head by itself. Typically a headlock as a throw is done with an arm trapped along side the head. You'll get much more leverage that way, and you'll be able to hold the guy down better as well. All that said, the headlock is a fairly low percentage maneuver in wrestling or judo. Most experienced grapplers won't get caught in it. And particularly from a submission wrestling/jiu jitsu point of view, the headlock is nearly useless. You might grab one for a moment just to settle things down, but you should be moving onto something else quickly.

I'm still not sure how a headlock can be a arm wrapped around a person's head. The position would not allow for a lock since the head could slip through. A headlock is around the neck and locks the head into position. Ice is most certainly correct though that most headlocks aren't submissions worthy of use against trained competitors. Side, front, and rear headlocks from a standing position are easy to get out of. On the ground, they are more uncomfortable, but still not great. The rear naked choke however is one that is exponentially more likely to submit the opponent.
