Alright, I wasn't planning to ask about it but what harm could it do?

I have an old Sony Vaio desktop computer that was made in like 2005 I wanna say. Used to belong to my dad and now I have it. I don't know what modifications he made to it when he had it, but I seem to recall him saying he replaced the video card and possibly added more memory. Not sure. Anyway, I got it from him last year and around March of this year the thing went screwy and died (as in, I could hit the power button and some lights would come on and the fan would start up, but there was no display and no sound). I gave the tower to my brother in law to fix, and got it back about a month ago. I was told the problem was with the video card, and that they had replaced it with one they had "lying around" in the basement that seemed to work (my brother in law does computer work, networking, repairs, etc so they have tons of spare parts lying around). I was a little unhappy with getting a used video card, but beggars can't be choosers n all that.

Well, a couple days ago the display started getting funny. I'm having the worst time describing it so I'll just show you a couple photos I have.

What seems to be happening is the color is bleeding across the screen from images and text. The windows are also now all slightly transparent. So, see how the top half of the right window is dark, and the bottom half is lighter? The white color from the bottom window is bleeding across the screen and brightening the bottom half of the upper window. Also the stripes of grey you see all through the right window are from the text. This distortion/color bleeding stays right with the windows when I move them as well. No lag.

My first thought was that the monitor was fucking up but this is not the case. I took the tower downstairs and hooked it up to my mother's computer monitor which I know to be working perfectly, and I had the same effect. This leads me to believe the problem is with the video card.

Alright, stats:

PC:
Sony Vaio running Windows XP Professional
System Model: PCV-RZ56G(UC)
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.40 GHz (2 CPUs) (this is /not/ what I remember the computer having before I gave it to my bro in law to fix. Might he have given it a new processor as well then?)
Memory: 2048 MB

Video Card:
NVIDIA RIVA TNT2/TNT2 Pro
Memory: 32 MB

One more pic because it gave me the perfect example. See how the lines from the buttons are bleeding across the screen? And the faint gray stripes that come out from the text? That's not because I took a picture of the computer screen with my phone. That's actually there. Sad

Incidentally, these ATI Catalyst files from the old video card are still on the computer. BeachBum mentioned those might conflict with the new video card and cause problems. Could that be what made everything start acting funky?

Also I wanna stress, I do not use this machine for gaming. It is strictly for web browsing, chatting, downloading, and watching videos/movies on it. No gaming.

My video card is acting up now too. I have an ATI Radeon, but beyond that I can't say because it refuses to show up in my device manager now.

Vald look and see if there's any unknown devices in device manager.

Aika, I'd suggest taking the card out and reinserting it (Be VERY careful) because it could've loosened a bit in the transport between his place and yours.

If that doesn't fix it take a look at device manager and see if he installed a driver for it.

Go to AMD and download the newest drivers for your system. Then go into the Control Panel and uninstall all drivers for video that you have including things that may be from older or non-existant cards (like nVidia or Intel drivers). In Device Manager most likely it will be under Display Adapters and currently filled with a generic VGA driver. Feel free to hit the uninstall on that if the new AMD drivers dont' fix the issue.

Aika, the card you mentioned is 12 years old... The computer itself is 9. I would suggest matching the computer with a similarly aged card. If you look around on Craigslist or other sites or stores, you can probably find an older used card that is fine for under $20. I assume you need a PCI or AGP card. Make sure you find out which slot it is.

Feel free to take a picture of the case opened and share that with us if you want a description.

I would be looking for a Geforce 3/4 card for that aged computer (at the very least).

Apparently it was just an overheating issue, which caused my video card to shut off, which would explain why it disappeared from Device Manager.

Wow. I just saw 32MB Video card.

I think I was playing Doom or Doom II last time I had a 32MB Video Card.

Is the fan still spinning on it?

You might be able to find a 3rd party fan or an OEM one from the support group that made the card. If the fan is the issue.

If not, perhaps the card needs to have any OC'd settings set back to factory.

And lastly, it is possible the thermal paste is shot, take the fan off and put it back on, checking and replacing any missing or bad paste.

Mmk, because both Hack and my brother-in-law suggested that the card might have gotten knocked loose, I took the tower apart again and took the card out, blew it off a bit, and stuck it back in. Hooked everything back up and turned it back on. No change.

I guess the next step is to buy a new video card. :\

Make sure you know if it is an AGP or PCI slot for the video adapter.

If it has an AGP slot then you want an AGP graphics card. This is actually good news for you.

You can plug in any AGP card that does NOT have an external power requirement.

You should be able to find a card for under $30.

I must stress, that at $30, the value of the card would be higher than your entire system.

MaximumPC just did an article on building an entire brand new computer for $340 (September 2011 Magazine).
