This, lol.
I thought you were joking Syd, hehe. I charged mine directly into the 3DS on day one. That must have been awful having to do that all the time , every time since launch...

Well, since a month and a half after launch, cuz that's when I scratched it and decided to buy the cover. I was so annoyed, too. Why? Why can't I charge through the case. Now I know!

I have a seperate case that I put my 3DS in, then I put it in my pocket and I easily acquire several thousand steps during work. I get the marks on my top screen and I try to keep my 3DS clean. Maybe it's just a manufacturing error with some of them.

Nintendo has announced that they will be changing the manufacturer suggested retail price for their Nintendo 3DS handheld worldwide. The gaming system which launched less than five months ago at $249 will be available for a mere $169.99 come August 12. Similar cuts are occurring in Japan, Europe and Australia.
Did you catch that? It's an $80 price cut. That's almost 30% off of the original asking price for a product that fans and loyalists bought on the promise that great things were coming when nothing has come. And now this in less than six months. But don't worry. Nintendo has a plan for those of us who feel a bit chafed.
See, Nintendo understands the needs of the core customers who bought in early to feel satisfied with their purchase. So they're going to give everybody who bought a 3DS prior to this point the opportunity to download a collection of 10 NES games for free before they hit the eShop. They'll also be giving out ten Game Boy Advance titles, including Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario vs. Donkey Kong, before the end of the year. These GBA games are currently expected to be exclusive to early adopters or, as Nintendo calls them, "Ambassadors."
So, you're going to get twenty old games for free, some of which are very old and have already been milked to death on other downloadable platforms (NES games include Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber and The Legend of Zelda). This is supposed to make up for it.
I'm not the sort of guy who wants something for free. I'm glad that they're admitting that they're bending over their core consumers and offering them some form of compensation for the pleasure, but they can keep their exclusive downloads of games I bought from them at least once already. I just hope this teaches us all a lesson in early adoption. |

sweet. that makes it uber affordable now

This ain't good for Nintendo, though: they pulled this move because the 3DS only sold 700,000 units this past quarter.
Also: Destructoid? Ew.

When Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D dropped earlier this summer without the ability to reset save files, gamers were justifiably mad. And though it's been over a month since that story broke, it seems that another Japanese publisher didn't pick up on the resulting backlash. Namco's latest 3DS title, Pac-Man and Galaga Dimensions regrettably contains that exact issue.
According to Wired's Game|Life blog, there is simply no way to erase a save after it's been written to the cartridge. "I've looked all over, even going so far as to ask a Namco Bandai representative, and it doesn't seem like there's a way to erase the game data," the post reads, noting that this design doesn't just affect the earned in-game awards (which can't be deleted), but also high scores. That means the most recent high score is the only one that the game records -- bizarre! |

For the ones remarking about scratches or wobbling, did you gets your 3DS from Amazon?
Amazon thinks it might be responsible and has currently stopped selling the 3DS “because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it’s described.”
They added, “We’re working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.” Nintendo acknowledged the news and told VentureBeat today they are also looking into the issue.

Man, I'm glad my usual "wait a while to buy the newest game/console" policy is paying off again. It sounds like the 3DS is a bit of a bust so far.

I understand why some people see it as a bust, but I definitely do not regret buying one when it first came out. The 3D on some games is so immersive; because it's glasses-free and I can adjust the 3D level, it looks better than what you see in movie theaters. The catalog of games is definitely lacking right now, but the 3DS games that are out there are pretty great. The extra features (3D camera, 3D videos) are nice, and personally I love that there's a Netflix app on there. I've used that quite a bit. I'm psyched I'll be getting 20 games as a "reward" for buying it early, too.
I'm glad they'll be dropping the price though. More people should definitely get it.

I bought my 3DS from Amazon, didn't have an issue. I also bought mine with 4 launch titles though, so it came packed differently than if you just bought the system.
As for the titles, we definitely need more. I will say, being currently addicted to Catherine, I am now looking forward to that Shin Megami Tensei game coming out. As market penetration increases, I am hoping that we will see developers do more with Street Pass.

how much do those NES & GBA games run? $5 a piece? so, not a bad trade off for buying early.

I think you were right about that. Just a bit ago I accidentally dropped my 3DS, and now each corner is scratched, making the system look like a piece of shit. Now to make shit up so I can get a warranty replacement. (Would the screen marking issue count as a defect? because I could use that to get a replacement)

I'm with Klimb, this price drop is great, I hope the whole community scoops one of these up at least by when Mario Kart comes out (December).

Yea, they pretty much had no choice. Iwata got it real bad, a 50% paycut is pretty steep.

I wonder if Miyamoto counts as an executive and if he was asked to take a pay cut.

The article shows a modest president willing to do the right thing for the company and consumers no matter the consequences. The best part is that he is taking the largest hit of all and apologizing that their original plans weren't more accurate. If only more companies worked this way.
I wonder if this will lead to the Nintendo WiiU being released at a lower price point than originally discussed.

They made such a huge buffer with the Wii that they have a lot more time with this than most outlets are giving them credit for. I have faith that they will turn it around within 18 months. It frustrates me that people are calling the lackluster sales of the 3DS the beginning of the end for Nintendo.

Even better: The 3DS will have proper DLC some day, as will the WiiU. Nintendo said that they will not use it very often themselves, presumably to avoid abusing it like so many other developers have.
| Quote: |
Nintendo may be selective in its use of this system for itself, though. He and Shigeru Miyamoto are interested in the possibility of extending the life of games through added stages and other features that players want. However, Iwata believes that pursuing certain types of low quality paid download content opportunities -- things like unlocking keys or stat increases -- would, while likely increasing short term profits, not not allow them to build along term relationship with customers. Therefor, Nintendo feels that it should not have this type of low quality content for itself.
Iwata also questioned the concept of free-to-play games, where you start playing the game for free and are charged for item purchases. He feels that this type of system would damage the premium value Nintendo's content.
On the topic of digital downloads in general, Iwata noted that the 3DS internet connection rate is far beyond that of the DS. However, it's still not at the one hundred percent satisfaction level, and furthermore, only a fraction of those people actually download paid content.
He hopes that over the next three years, Nintendo will make the Nintendo e-Shop, the online shop that's accessible from the 3DS, into a larger presence. His hope is that digital business will see a great increase, more drastic than an increase in 5 or 10 percent over current levels. He also hopes to create a future where players will pay for digital content just like normal with no reservations. This will be a major point for Nintendo over the next three years, said Iwata.
Iwata stressed that the greater presence of digital sales does not mean that package software will go away. Rather, he wants to establish the digital business as another pillar. |
Emphasis mine. Finally, someone important gets why people hate DLC. And Nintendo of all companies? It's almost as if they're saying, "We told you so." But how far will they go to prevent their third parties from bringing the worst of DLC to their own systems?

Just a question: For the 3DS ambassador program thingy, I am guessing that the NES games are free, and the GBA games are paid. Am I right?
