The first three downloadable characters for Mortal Kombat weren't entirely new -- Rain and Kenshi were both in previous games, and Skarlet was in Mortal Kombat II, albeit as what amounted to a glitch. NetherRealm had been keeping the identity of the fourth character close to its chest. Today it finally revealed who the last of the bunch will be: Freddy Krueger, of A Nightmare on Elm Street fame, is joining the game's cast of fighters.
Unfortunately, Krueger looks to be based on the 2010, Michael Bay-produced A Nightmare on Elm Street, as opposed to Wes Craven's 1984 original. The older film saw Krueger played by Robert Englund, whereas last year the role was assumed by Jack E. Haley, who also played Rorschach in Watchmen.
Disappointing as that may be, this is still Frederick Charles Krueger you'll be playing as in Mortal Kombat -- fatalities and all. Like the previous DLC characters, he will cost $4.99 (400 Microsoft Points) upon release on August 9.
seeing him fight kind of makes sense in the MK universe. especially since Krueger is owned by WB. my only gripe is that he has 2 gloves instead of just one. i know its a small thing to be nitpicky about, but it just doesnt feel right.

Freddy makes perfect sense in a way, but it blows it's not original Freddy.
I'd LOVE to see Jason in a fighting game!

If they release a classic Freddy skin, I'll buy him. Doesn't make sense for them to use the Haley Freddy. The movie didn't do great and unless things have changed, there are no plans for a sequel.

Then it will no matter what both suck and blow... in any order

I've been over this with the dr who game, it makes sense to use the most recent version of the character. Also the remake was the most successful freddy movie not featuring jason voorhees.

It was the highest grossing. It did not have the highest profit ratio. And gross is such a bullshit scale. Freddy's Dead was 1991. Ticket prices are almost double what they were then. Of course the reboot made more money.
Also. Dr. Who makes sense because it's an active franchise. As recently as month and a half ago, there were no plans for a sequel to the reboot, or even a script for one. Friday the 13th has a script, but I don't think has been greenlit.
Since the franchise is inactive, it makes sense to use Englund Freddy. He also fits better with the style of the game.
I don't wanna be one of those "lolz the reboot sucked!" kinda guys because it had a lot of potential. Instead we got an extremely slow moving movie with like, 3 deaths total not counting Freddy. If they were trying to be realistic or something, NOES is literally the worst franchise to do that with. It's a fucking nightmare man with claws, why isn't he killing more people goddammit!??!

Well, unfortunately, we can all guess what matters more to the powers that be.
That said, I think we all appreciate a "blood fountain" fatality, at least.
So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

Fuck Jackie Earle Krueger. You know who I want in the game? Charles Lee Ray.
Freddy Krueger
Jason Voorhees
Pinhead
Pumpkinhead
Leatherface
The zombie chick from Return of the Living Dead III
The Tall Man (Phantasm)
A Xenomorph
The Leprechaun (and/or Chucky)
Satoris (The Final Sacrifice)
...that would be a cool fighting game.

Ugh, don't ever mention any Return of the Living Dead past 2 again.
Also, I'd add:
Norman Bates
The Thing From Outer Space
David Lo Pan
Michael Myers
Dr. Phibes
Sammi Curr
The Warlock
Candyman
Ash Williams
i hope they have the TV fatality for Freddy Krueger... PRIME TIME, BITCH!!
EDIT: apparently, freddy is not based off the old version or the new version:
Quote:
"We didn't try to make him look like the actor Robert Englund, I don't even know if we would be allowed to... Admittedly, I didn't see the latest movie, the remake. But obviously the first few movies were huge -- they left an undeniable mark on pop culture. When I look at him, I think of the original Freddy: he's got the striped sweater and is instantly recognizable. He's Freddy in general, we don't really identify him as one version or another."
PSB: Freddy isn’t exactly a martial artist. How does he keep up with the kombatants?
[laughs] He doesn’t fight like a martial artist, either! We gave him two claws, which we explain in his character bio, so you can almost imagine a Baraka with shorter blades that are always out. He’s got lots of swipes, he can send his claws creepy-crawling on the ground or flying through the air. He can dig into the ground and the claws will come up under his opponent. He’s very claw-centric.
I wonder his bio will say..."Freddy didn't feel symmetrical enough so he made an identical claw for his visit to Outworld."

Syd: "They gave Freddy a second claw. Apparently, they couldn't figure out how to design a character with a single claw."
Jeebus: "I guess they never played Street Fighter 2."
Sure he is. Freddy can do anything he wants, because his powers follow dream rules and not real world rules. I assume that in Outworld, he'll have his dream powers, because in any instance where Freddy has been pulled out of the dream world into the real world (aka Earthrealm), he's a little bitch. In Earthrealm, Freddy's just a guy with a claw who is easily slowed, stopped, or killed by anything that would slow, stop, or kill a regular middle-aged man. Sure, he's still a unrelenting sadist with a claw, but give him one good stab or two and he's pretty much useless.
