This is an irony mark
Quote: |
[It is] used to indicate that a sentence should be understood at a second level (e.g. irony, sarcasm, etc.).
|
Its shape is the horizontal mirror image of a question mark.

It is a shame that something like this never took off. It probably would have been useful in writing if we were used to seeing it.

It probably didn't take off because it looks like some kind of Mexican bullshit.
They should have used a backwards asterisk.

The asterisk that used to be in my name was backwards, I just never told anyone before now.

The interrobang could beat up the irony mark.

As a point of interest, Unicode U+061F is an Arabic question mark ؟, but it doesn't display properly in this font.

To be honest, I like that idea a lot. It's different and would clear up a LOT of confusion. Especially on here.

I'm aware that they're different, but they're both modified question marks, and I think it's a valid point. I think a lot of English language enthusiasts didn't want something as classy as irony taking punctuation cues from something as mediocre as the Spanish language.

There's a simple reason this never took off: it's fucking retarded. In legitimate writing, having a punctuation mark to highlight "Hey, asshole! I'm being ironic, sarcastic, or possibly muttering 'that's what she said' under my breath!" is extraordinarily lazy and no good writer should ever need bullshit like this. As The Joker said, "if you have to explain the joke there is no joke!"
The only place this would ever be useful is in text messages, but if you can't tell when your friends are being sarcastic in a text then you probably aren't very good friends anyway.

I was reading through the topic and thinking "why has nobody said this yet! I'll post it!" but then the very last post was Jeebus doing it for me so now I'm just quoting his post and telling a cool story, bro.
